What's the deal with carbon fiber barrels?

I know a bunch of companies offer them, and I did just get one for my T8, but I've always been curious.

Aside from the weight difference, what's so special about them?

Are they smoother than other materials?
Are they stronger than other materials?

Is it all just another barrel gimmick?

Carbon fiber is one of the strongest man made materials. The bores when done right, I.e. DW are incredibly smooth. Carbon fiber barrels also tend to have a softer sound signature so they are not as loud as SS or aluminium barrels.

I love my stiffi, very light and smooth. In the winter doesn't get as cold as a aluminium barrel and people say when you break a ball it cleans out easier after some shots ( haven't experienced that myself but) I also tend to get scratches in my aluminium easier than carbon fiber

Cf is definitely quieter. As your stated, it's also much lighter, although to me the weight of a barrel is a gimmick. It's not like the extra few ounces will make a noticeable difference. I have heard that using barrel swabs can cause burs and to only use rubber squeegees, but I don't know how true that is. As for self cleaning, I've never come across a barrel better than my Furious. I've only had one carbon barrel, it was a 10" Deadlywind when I first got my first Phenom. As we all know now, and I found out the hard way, Phenoms and Freak style barrels don't play well with each other.

You wont have a problem swabbing a DW or a newer style Stiffi (such as a Metal Free) but the first gen Stiffi's and some of the later models did not like to swabbed; they would pull the carbon apart because the cotton would get stuck and tear as it was being swabbed.

I was skeptical for years. Then two months ago I bought a Fibur. I will never go back.

-And that was from 2004.

Not really 'bashing' CF barrels, but really, there's a lot more hype than fact to 'em.
