I put Orings in my replacement Sheridan bolt but I've also done delrin bolts with no Orings.

Something that CAN help just a bit is some very narrow slots to act as labyrinth seals. They are easy to do and may help just that little bit more on a no Oring bolt. I ground up a Super Micro Parting tool sort of shape to make the grooves. Around 10 to 15 thou wide and cut the grooves about 20 thou deep. I cut 3 grooves per "Oring" spaced around 50 to 60 thou apart.

I have no idea if they help or not but they are supposed to and they look real tech'y and are great for accumulating Poser Value Points or PVP's....

A bolt with O-rings will be a more efficient. How much depends on the fit. But it will also need lube, and slightly more effort to move. Perhaps not noticeably.

Like Triggerhappy said, just some little grooves may help a little by disrupting returning airflow. If nothing else, they really wouldn't hurt a ringless bolt.

As for the rings, anything the proper size. The actual marker will effect that size.

Research is the key before making a product, that said what do you thing the o-rings are in there for? They are there to account for tolerance differences from gun to gun.

You can play around with it-

Try this: run ONE o-ring in between the feed port and the gas transfer port, i.e. the middle one.

I'm sure youre looking at a stock bolt and getting your dimensions, right? Try making the new o-ring groove *slightly* deeper, say 10-15 thou deeper than the stock grooves. I found that approach would seal almost exactly as well as a normal depth o-ring groove, but reduced the cycling effort.

And if all else fails, you can go back and cut o-ring grooves in the bolts.
