Recocking a Nelson Valve without air.
Ok, there's always the new kid on the forums who just got some sort of Nelson Type Gun and worrying that he can't cock the thing.
Then people will come in and say that's normal for a nelson valve, you usually cannot cock it without air in it.
Then some wise*** will come in and say "well with the right springs you could cock it without air"
To which I usually reply "Well the kid probably just bought the gun, I HIGHLY doubt he knows how to spring it to be able to cock without air"
Does anyone have a nelson setup so that they can recock it without air. I know in theory how it works (Super strong Valve spring, Super weak main spring) but I just have never seen it before. Thanks!

Yes. My carter machine boxgun cocks without air, as do many of his other guns because of the way he springs them. You just need a valve spring slightly heavier than the main spring. There is not necessarily any benefit to having it cock without air though.

I've had my Bushmaster like this but, it's never remained this way- tuning almost always gets it to the point of a stronger mainspring.

I remember a kid at the local field that had just bought himself a Rebline. (a great Bushmaster clone). This was about 25 years ago or so.
He takes it out of the box.... and it does not cock. He panics. This was before Al Gore created the internet, so he takes out a dremel, and CUTS the pump slots about 1/4" BIGGER.
Great, now it can cock, but he does not have any co2 yet to test it. That Sunday, he brings his new Rebline to the field to show off. It is a really nice looking gun. One of the view you can buy in a color other then black or grey.
So he fills his tank, goes to the chrono. Everything seems to be working great. Then he takes the modified Rebline to the first game.
As soon as the game starts, and he pumps the gun..... POP! the hopper flys off, and paint fills the breech! lol By cutting the slots, it allowed the pump itself to open the cupseal, but only if pumping hard.
It was very, very funny. Hearing a "pop" is normal with nelsons on the open stroke, especially with a light valve spring.... but this was the worst I'd ever seen

It serves no purpose to be able to "cock" an nelson without air on it so why worry about doing it.
