refilling disposable co2 cartidges

just a thought I had, I figured I would ask you all to see if it is possible before I further waste my efforts.
So far I have tapped an empty cart for 1/8 npt and threaded a back check onto the cart ( the end that holds pressure back once disconnected. the problem with this was that too much co2 escaped when unhooking the back-check from the fill source.
I also tried threading a hpa fill nipple into a 1/8 npt male/female extension I got from palmers. The extension allowed the pin inside the fill nipple to slide in when filling but kept the pin from falling inside the cart. The problem with this method was similar to the last, too much gas/liquid escaping during disconnection, and the fill nipple pin I think was not sealing up when I tried to bleed out the pressure in the fill lines I think because there was a lot of pressure when disconnecting the Q.D..

Has this been done before? were you able to get a full fill?

Here ya go. I'm not quite sure how it works or how to refill it, I just knew I'd seen it somewhere.

I saw the thread discussing those, still waiting to hear how they work, and how well. funny, looks like the cart breaks in two halves, whats up with that? also looks like they have a pin valve installed..hmmm. maybe that's the route I need to go, build my own pin valve for a cartridge and then a custom receiver on the gun with a pin to depress the cart's pin valve, just like how a normal tank screws into an asa, and build a mini fill station on/off for 3/8 threaded carts..sounds like a lot of work

what other options are there?

People have since the beginning of paintball tried to find a way to reuse a disposable 12gram. Smarter minds that you and I have pondered the question. If it was going to be possible someone would have done it 20 years ago. Leelands are like .30$ a peice deal with it.

I don't think thats terribly fair.

Technology has changed a lot.

That said I think if you are going to do it your best bet is to find a way to miniaturize a version of the gonlin valve and design the cartridge around that

What about those 88gr cartridges that come with an ASA adapter? Obviously it would be easy to plug into a regular CO2 fill station, the hard part would be weighing it...

The disposable cartridges are not DOT certified for repeat filling, its unsafe and unlawful.

I've seen a couple modded 12g carts to be refillable, I've also seen people drill and tap them for fittings, and the fittings usually blow out running co2 or 800 psi air, even thought the cartridges originally held liquid co2.

Any modification to the cartridge to make it refillable is going to make it potentially unsafe. There's a reason that have to make special pre-threaded thick walled dummy 12g's for running hoses and remote lines.

Unsafe is debatable, unlawful is only if the refilled cartridge is transported over public roads.
