Too much air=blown gauge?

So I picked up an autococker with a 300 psi gauge on the vertical ASA on it.
Will I blow the gauge if I hook up co2 directly to it or must I run a regulator, such as the stabilizer I have lying around?
Also, there is a brown/rusty dirt around the outer edge of the gauge, internally, under the glass,on the gauge face.
Any way to clean that up, or is it a sign of problems to come?
Thanks, lonegunmen

If you put in too much pressure, you will kill the gauge so dont put a tank into that ASA.

Get a reg, put it at it lowest setting then air it up and bring the pressure up gradually.

OK, thanks for clearing up my doubts on that.
I can always plug it if I blow it, but I had a gauge zing past me this summer, not fun...
Thanks, lonegunmen

I've had gauges explode on me when the reg didn't reg quickly enough. Pull it out and plug the hole.
