Pawnshop find / Barrel ID help please

well, I was cruising the local pawnshp and scored a VM-68 magnum for $50 today. Needs a little TLC, but looks ok. However It has a barrel I'm not familiar with. Camera is MIA, but i'll describe it at well as I can.

Brass body, maybe 12 inches long, black coating. the barrel isn't threaded, instead it has a collar that slides down the barrel and threads into the VM. There is an o-ring between the collar and barrel base. Collar is maybe 3 inches long, and 1/2 is grooved paralell to the barrel.

I'm guessing the barrel will fit many diffrent markers if you have the right collar for it...

So... What kind of barrel is this, and whats it's value for trades?

Also, the VM needs new mainsprings, and a new detent. Where can I get these?

Sounds like a standard VM-68 stock barrel by the description.Standard Stock VM barrels are not threaded and use a collar to hold the barrel in

thanks, thats what I thought it might be, but wasn't sure.

Well, the VM also came with an old-school 'raincover' and the trigger guard is longer than my last one and is drilled for a bottomline or other 2 screw device.

So, was it a good score for $50?

Yeah - I don't think it was a good score. If you'd like to be rid of that rip-off, I'll be happy to send you $50.00 for it.

After some further research, it seems to be a EXC-68 with the expansion chamberremoved, and bottomline removed. the feedneck isn't all black, but striped like a stock VM. Maybe it's just parts assembled into a VM? I dunno.

I may be willing to trade it.... I just couldn't let it sit next to a bunch of spyders and crap. It also came with 3 oldschool 50rd black pods by "butler creek corp". Yay pawnshops.

I'm hoping for something older, as I'm at my Raptor quota at the moment. That so something to bolt onto this A5 I traded for.

Camera has been fount, pics soon.

Note: Early aftermarket VM barrels also used that collar.

So, could also be a J&J I suppose.

One of my ebay vm's also had a 14" brass barrel with a collar. It looks ( the barrel) exactly like a stock one except its 6" longer. Even th OD is the same.

The stock brass barrels on PMI-III's and the VM's can shoot really well with some basic work: Degrease the interior with some brake-kleen. Push some *tight* wads of toilet paper thru the barrel with a dowel. Find a gun store that sells "Lead-Wipe-Away" cloths. You cut a patch about 2" square and put one of the tight balls of TP inside the patch of lead-wipe-away cloth.
Push it through with the dowel about 20 times. This leaves a smooth interior in the barrel without the inevitable ringing that hones leave.
Now, spray in more brake-kleen, and push some more wads of TP through, and shoot it dry.

If you want to do a simple improvement, and you have a lathe, cut a -11 degree crown to the interior edge of the barrel. This protects the edge of the barrel (criticalo to accuracy) and gives good gas dispersion.
