Tribals haven't been made for a long time...

I'm not sure if the merlin extrusion has the proper dimensions for some of the air passages on a Tribal... It's been a long time since I've seen either.

Strictly, probably not. I'm pretty sure AKA had Merlin extrusion made for them alone.

Dimensionally, it's possible. The way Tribals can be cut, you could mill away the pump rod slots, and the bores are pretty standard, so you could really copy any design that will work with identical stacked tubes.

well i only ask because cyborgs are made from merlin extrusions, and looking at the tribals, they look to be exactly the same external dimensions. anyone ever measured the inside dimensions?

This sounds right to me. I'm not 100% on it, but this sounds right.

I don't know the dimensions of the Tribals and Merlins offhand, but I'm pretty sure Tribals weren't originally manufactured direct from Merlin extrusions. Tribals were originally manufactured in Bulgaria by the cheapest means possible - look, I love 'em, but they're not really high quality markers - so I honestly doubt that Francois Louvette (notorious penny pincher) paid good cash money for Merlin extrusions.

Now, could you make a Tribal/Cyborg/Impulse/Intimidator/Angel/Bushmaster'esque electro from a Merlin extrusion? Sure, almost all of the components you can get off the shelf except for the ram (unless one of the above-mentioned markers' rams fits the lower tube dimensions on the Merlins), and the only change to the body would be the low-pressure feed passage down to the solenoid hookup, which can be accomplished a couple of ways.

And you're right, Cyborgs came about because of a deep discussion between MacDev and a Tribal-centric airsmith that went by the handle of ME262, as they were trying to resurrect the Tribal and/or trying to make one very similar to make some bank off of it. He fell out of the deal (the original project was going to be named Virus, I seem to remember) and pretty much out of airsmithing and paintball all together, and a couple of years later, MacDev reveals the Cyborg.
