your not going to remove .005" with a flexhone unless your using the coursest grit. the levigated alumina flexhone is the way to go IMO and there is no way you'll remove .005" with it unless you leave it spinning in the barrel all day. you really will have to go to town to even remove the paint overspray in a Sheridan barrel with the levigated alumina hone.

I repeat what I clearly posted earlier, with a superfine flexhone, it took 30 passes to remove .002. How does 30 passes qualify as 'easy' exactly? What, I fell asleep at ten and didn't snap out of it until 19 later?

Be honest, have you ever even seen one of the Levigated Alumina? They are a special order and never came in the airsmith kit. you're criticising a hone that I NEVER recommended I think. Just like a detent is not necessarily a wedgit, a 160 grit Silicon Carbide is not the same as an 800 grit AO or the one above that, the LA superfine.

The irony is, I have a stack of barrels to hone at a HSI scenario game this weekend from people who don't know or care about any of this. They've just seen me make shots that their regular barrels don't allow them to make. If I can beat a pump Viper in the chrony station at HS at a game of P-I-G(like the basketball version) with a $120 cheesemetal hongkong special and I have and would be happy to again, they just want to get some of that.

I will now and finally stand quietly by what I've said, secure that when I was shown to be wrong in this thread I promptly apologized, as I always try to do.

Rob

christ dude, stop posting!!!

you repeat the same argument.. and I think anyone who read the first page worth of posts could get the gist of the whole thread.. Barrel hones are your favorite, and according to you, polish makes grooves bigger... which is debateable.. (by not stating an argument, I'm giving you a reason not to state a counter argument.. so we both can leave this beaten horse of a thread)

and swabs are an ok alternative as a cheap quick, and easy way to do it..

as azzy says, Jelly balls!!! not precision ground musket balls

i'm exaggerating some about the all day part but really it would take a lot of spinning to remove that much material with the Levigated Alumina hone. think of it it terms of sandpaper. how much material will 1000 grit sandpaper remove? very, very little. the LA hone is no different. sure, they do make a hone that will remove .005" without much work if that's what you want. it's just a matter of using the right grit hone for the job you want to do.

First you're the 'voice of collective MCB members', now you're a mod ordering me to quit posting, what next, are you going to start signing your posts 'Carter Brown'?
If you knew any more about psychology than you did metal finishing or manners, you'd have known you might as well have called my house and begged me to post.

I guess they don't teach any of those subjects on PBNation...

It's sad to see this place turning into MCBN.

If you don't like what I post, quit clicking on this thread, since your total input has been to agree with other people who have now all abandonded you because they see I was right, new info=0.

For those who might actually hone something that are reading this, make sure to reverse directions frequently if you are using a swab for polishing a barrel with and clean all paint residue out with acetone before you hone or swab!

Sly isnt a mod.

Also, you guys need to chill out a bit. Its a shame that a very informative thread such as this has turned into a shouting match...
