old nelson cocker rear IVG mod

hey all you gurus out there, I've got a hack job question for you..

I just reaquired an old '94 evolution w/ nelson springs, and nelson style ivg rear plug thing - like a rex dialer, but pre-dating that a few years.

what im dissatisfied with is the amount of spring tension on the main spring that is caused by the "all the way out" setting on the IVG.

I was thinking of cutting the back off the IVG plug and retapping the plug for the 10/32 screw a bit further forward - so I can use full length nelson springs.

Anyone out there done this mod to lessen main spring tension w/o cutting the main spring?

the hammer Im using I believe is a very early belsales style - very "shallow" in depth (opposite from a CCM style hammer)

Are you sure it's a nelson adjuster? The nelson adjusters are just discs that are threaded on the outside and have a hex hole in the middle. Your lower tube needs to be threaded to use this style ivg.

The old style are plugs that have the adjuster on the inside. The adjuster is the same diameter as a sheridan spring... whic is what you would use. Also this style does not need the inside of the lower tube threaded. I'm fairly certain that stock a '94 evo' would have come with this style.

Also.. pics would help.... especially seeing as I can't remember what a rex adjuster looks like.

There are adjusters for Nelson springs that are similar to the old Sheridan adjuster, I have one in my minicocker.

I have one on my 97 Cocker as well - granted, it's an aftermarket piece, and it suffers from the same problem as mentioned in the original post.

IIRC, B mentioned somewhere that Cockers take a specific Cocker spring - similar to Nelson springs, but shorter. I have compared stock Nelson-style Cocker mainsprings to a Nelson set I have here at home, and the Nelsons are longer.

Best bet is to get a Cocker-specific spring kit, from the likes of Maddman or another company. They should fit properly. If not, then you'll need to cut them.

that kind of was the point - I was thinking of modding the adjuster plug as opposed to cutting springs.

It would be far easier to cut a spring.... how would you plan on modifying the plug? Increase travel? then you would need to make a longer plug that stuck out the back of the gun into where the block sits.

If it were my choice.... pair of diagonal cutters vs. machine time... the cutters win.

I guess its all personal, but I have found full length springs are happier than cut springs - and produce more consistant results. I'll post up my efforts on the nelson ivg plug mod.

That's the point I was trying to make - Cockers don't take Nelson springs, they take Cocker springs.

Try a Cocker-specific set - if they don't fit, THEN cut stuff up.

Unless what you have is a Cocker set - then ignore what I said.

Hell, Thumper just thread the body for an IVG and get rid of the Nelson Adapter.
