Period correctness...

I'm in the process of acquiring a '96/'97 Cocker and was wondering what period correct/old school upgrades are out there. I'm really curious as to popular barrels from that time, as well as grip frames. Were we using drop forwards then, or were they a more late(r) 90's phenomenon?

Thanks guys...

-Eli

we had both drops and duckbills. I would say ridiculously forward drops were the 'fad'
JandJ or SP ported barrels, and Palmer barrels (for the less mainstream)
Armson was another, but be careful of bore sizes these days...
I didn't shoot cockers, so I can't help you much with frames.... Shot a typhoon back then.

At that point in the mid 90s, though, I think most were still using remotes? At least for HPA.

Dropforwards originally came out so you could run Co2 tanks on a bottomline, without liquid getting into the valve. Then people realized the funny angle meant it helped balance those huge 114ci tanks popular in the 90s.

Anyway, a nice huge Rock with thumb adjuster, and maybe Smart Parts All American barrel?

J&J, BOA and SP barrels from the time are a good choice. I'm not sure when the DYE one piece stainless came out, but I think it was a little bit after that. I can't recall how long I had my cocker when I ordered one of those (at great expense). Grip frames were not a common upgrade at the time (at least not that I had seen, and definitely not like they have been in recent years), most people were sticking with the stock frames at that time and then the .45 frames started to become more prevalent later. Inline regs were also uncommon "off the shelf". Many cockers were shipped as packages with expansion chambers at that time. I upgraded to an AA reg when I switched over to nelson style springs and tried to lower the operating pressure a little bit. Some other common "upgrades" were beavertails (I bought a TASO), and rock regs.

Edit: I had forgotton the threaded timing rod. It was a very popular and handy upgrade. I bought a stainless TASO model, with a matching cocking rod.

I would have to say a nice .45 slider frame, threaded timing rod,, SP AA barrel (probably a 16", seems to be a popular length). I know I liked to use a small drop-forward at the time. Definitely a non-slotted trigger plate, or at least a flattened timing rod. I don't remember when the cut backblocks came out - if it doesn't have it, definitely get one.

I've been shooting Cockers of some sort since 1999/2000, around then...If you can find them, BOA barrels were always nice - I always had one on a Cocker until they went out of business several years ago and I sold my last one.

About what time was Benchmark making frames with the built-in drop? Similar to the Powerlyte frames.

This is gonna be a Sniper, BTW. I'm not gonna kill myself trying to find all the right parts, I just want a couple nods to that time. Wanderlustre has a 16" J&J hardchrome I might wanna buy, and I have an AA unireg on the way. A frame and maybe a drop (depending on what I want to use for air) are going to round the project out.

Thanks for the input guys; I really appreciate it...

DYE was "late" in the game with the barrels starting to come out around 1999/2000.

FOr really period barrels look at J&J brass or SP All American for the "mass" produced.

Eli... did you win sugarstump's AA unireg that he just had on ebay.. you dog you!

Dye was making barrels earlier than that, we were using boomsticks in 97-98 so the one-pieces probably predated that by a bit.

For the OP - definitely slider frame, swing frames were not out yet.

drg... really. I had a Dye lite that I got in 2000. I guess I had assumed that was one of their first. Sorry for that.
