Thats actually what I roll with now. I outgrew it in about one weekend. Its a nice little machien but a little too small for me. I only picked it up because I snaked a deal with a buddy who was moving into an apartment and needed to get rid of it.
If you have the extra cash though I would bump it up atleast 1 size.

I think that this one may be pushing my space limits as-is. The reason I'm considering it is because it's semi-manageable and about the price of a new Sherline.

I'm thinking of making smaller parts like custom Nelson bits rather than full on barrel boring and body work etc.

That, plus with this derringer build-off coming up, who needs big?!

You'd be suprised. You can do some pretty neat stuff on this little lathe...I do barel boring, all kinds of stuff.

Im thinking I might jump in on this build off actually. Ive got a neat little idea that should'nt take too much time for me to complete.

I think it's probably the most interesting build off we've seen here so far, I'm pretty excited to see the range of entries at the end.

Because they are priced out of the market compared to what you can get the imported stuff for. It's different if it's a business and you can afford to write it off through depreciation but when it's a hobby you gotta make your hobby dollars spread out.

Russ, that 4000 has a 3/4 inch headstock bore. No way you want that for paintball projects. it won't hold a barrel. You need to get one with at least a 1 inch headstock bore. The rest is up for discussion but the headstock bore is a must have/deal breaker on its own for paintball work. I know you say you want to just do small stuff but you're cutting off your nose to spite your face if you compromise on only a little more money and size/weight. A lathe is once or twice in a lifetime sort of deal. You don't want to get so close but be so far. I can't stress how handy an extra 1/4 inch for the HS bore is. Even if it's just for being able to chuck up raw stock without having to saw it into short bits. The money you save on the smaller machine will easily be eaten up in hacksaw blades! ! ! ! !

If some of you are really tight for room then there are a few of the 3in1 machines that are OK. But the majority of them have so many shortcomings and flaws that I'd question if they are good enough to anchor a boat let alone do serious work on metal. But the nice ones are very nice. I've even seen a couple I'd be willing to own. And I'm a machine snob of the worst order!

Russ, I've always wanted to do a run down to Grizzly in Bellingham. Road trip?

thread hijack, but related to lathe/mill topic..due to the utter complete lack of jobs hiring my very limited experience level in this depression.. I am looking at the G6760 milling machine with power feed....its bigger, and it looks to be useful...what concerns me is the motor..would it be able to stand up to use with carbide tooling and high speed cutters on aluminum and is the mill a good buy? I'm also looking at a lathe but i am kinda partial to the Monarch/Hardinge series of shop lathes lol.

That's your basic import Bridgport clone. So yeah, it'll easily handle carbide tooling and machining fairly aggresively in aluminium. Fit it with a continuous trickle or mist cutting/coolant system and it'll do some nice work for you.

That machine is what I want to buy myself as a retirement present in a year or two when I set up my retirement shop.....
