How do you use a compression fitting with a hard line?

Hi everyone

So i just received 2 compression fitting from palmer pursuit.

How do i connect the hard line to the compression fitting? Do i need to wrap teflon tape around the hard line then insert it into the compression fitting? Right now it would go in, but it is not very tight.

Thanks

update:

this is the straight fitting that i have: 1/8 NPT to 3/16 compression tube [FITT111] - $4.60 : Palmers Pursuit Shop!, Where Custom Still Means Something

and this is the elbow fitting that i have 1/8 NPT Elbow to 3/16 compression tube [FITT062] - $4.45 : Palmers Pursuit Shop!, Where Custom Still Means Something

with a standard 3/16 hard line.

the elbow hardline is working fine, however the straight fitting is very loose, and i am about 2 thread away from completely tightening it. Am i suppose to wrap it or just complete tightening it?

thanks

There should be a small round part, made of soft metal (usually copper) called a ferrule.

that part goes around your tube, maybe 1/8" from the end. That goes into the compression fitting, then the "cap" part goes on the tube, and when you tighten, it actually pushes the ferrule into the line, gripping it very strong.

I've always been told never to put sealant, or telfon over the ferrule. Over overtighten. Both things will deform the ferrule, and it will not work properly. JUST ENOUGH to seal the gas.

Use Tape or sealant on the Threaded side of the fitting, use nothing on the compression side of the fitting (follow HP's Directions)

I found the ferrule but there is another sleeve that is outside of that

the ferrule look like this right? ( ) and then i have another small piece that goes from outside of the fitting and slip into the ferrule and it look like this ......... \ /

However that piece is slipped very tightly into the ferrule and so it doesn't seal the hardline properly, should i attempt to pull it out?

Thanks

I haven't actually seen a palmers fitting, so I may be wrong here. Normally you use one or the other type of ferule not both. The () ferule is for soft materials like copper tubing ( and is usually made out of brass or something similar). The \/ ferule is used on stainless tubing.

I think you may have recieved both ferules since the fittings are sold for use with both types of materials. You may have buggered it up.

And like others have said, no sealants on the ferule side of the fitting. Also as a nice bonus, if it is a good quality compression fitting, you can take them apart whenever you need to and the matched pieces will go back together and seal.
