I shoot at a tree about 100 feet away until I can't break paint on it anymore.
I don't think it's an exact science...

Yes.
When I see a post in B/S/T sections here, sellers will say they get "X-Y" useable shots off a 12 gram. And I have always wondered what "usable" means, since one person's idea of useable is different from another. And it seems that the answers here use velocity as a basis for deciding on useable.

Like ThePixelGuru, I have always thought of distance as a measue of useable shots. Once the distance drops, I realize that I am running out of CO2 and must adjust distances accordingly. And when the distance starts to drop, that was a good point to say that the limit of useable has been reached, and then I could say that this marker has "X-Y" useable shots.

Thanks fellas for your responses!

Speaking of which... we should set a standard for "usable shots" aka above 250fps or something and create a thread with all the 12g using markers and what you can get stock and possibly modified.

Everyone could just pool their knowledge together. Dunno what section of the forum that would go in but it would be neat!

I've never taken the time to chrono each shot because there are so many variables per 12gram. I think most accurate way to know how many "usable" shots you're getting would be to install a quality gauge somewhere and note at what PSI you fall below your minimum velocity. It's all up to you, but with things being so expensive these days, I'd probably shoot down to 220FPS.

I used to play with a PMI-1 exclusively before I discovered the magic of direct feed and constant air, and I'd swap 12grams every ten shots if I had time, or up to twenty if I was in a bind. Hone those instincts, that "eye chrono", and you'll be a devastating stock class force. Let your gut guide you, grasshopper.

Edit: 700 posts, woot.

Tests that I've done, using 12g on different markers that I either have owned, or still in my possession.
All tests I conducted either indoors or out... Though during temperatures where maximum efficiency was expected for an estimated 250fps velocity.
Note: This test should exclude my Action Markers Illusion due to it's unfair advantage at below freezing temps. over all markers ever produced for which I do not have an answer for. But a top contender non the less.

Nelsons
Lets start with the grandfather of them all... Nelspot007. #6 Lapco power tube, Taso drop out, tuned respectfully = 67 shots.

Phantom Micro. Specs include a drop out valve respectfully tuned = 52 shots. Other valve set ups don't fare as well.

Sheridan
PGP Punisher tuned and never altered = 51 shots.

PMI1 PPS tuned = 36 shots

PPS SS all stock = 32 shots

Blazer all stock = 25 shots

P68 all stock = 25 shots

http://x92.xanga.com/60da6bf22943380.../b54565281.jpg
P68AT all stock = 18 shots (blame the speed demon for this)

07 Sterling all stock with a bottom line = 27 shots

Illusion Pro. Specs include a non ported brass PPS 10", .685id, and a CCI bucket changer, and factory speck springs = 38 shots above 250fps.

KPCS SC Scout, none ported brass PPS 10", .685id, otherwise all stock = 38 shots

SHO Brad Q Nestle's as was = 25 shots

Blow forward/Spool)
PTP Micro Mag all stock = 25 shots

Classic valved Pump Mags = 22 shots

mailmanmike Since Monday! That's more than 4 hours though, so according to those cialis ads I should see my doctor.
tlane77 I think for a non-chemical chubby it's 6 hours before its time to see a doctor. So you should be good for another couple hours.
splattttttt I wasn't goin to google "chubbin" because I assumed it had to do with fat. The lard type, not the fun stuff. But what ever feelings Jeff's experiencing, then they must be of the fun like stuff...

Haha.. that's what I chrono to in the first place (on a 300 field)

I'll use it down to 220 or so.

Can you be a little more specific about the velocity you tuned these markers for? Are you tuning for 250 fps or starting higher?

Yes Sir! I never go out with anything that shoots at less than 250fps, and above 275fps. So the variance is a +/- 25fps with an avarage of 262fps wich is what I consider an ideal velocity
