SL 68 II questions
Just got an old SL68 II (SN#1672) and I need some advice...
1.) Also picked up a J&J 14" barrel for it. Velocity isn't getting over 200 fps, I'm guessing it just needs some stiffer springs? It was between 240 and 280 fps with the stock barrel.
2.) Anyone use a gas-thru stock? I was thinking of running one.
3.) Anyone use 12 grams with this thing?
Thanks in advance.
Ware did you find the J&J if you dont mind me asking?
Is the velocity adjuster all the way out? The "screw it out to increase velocity" adjuster that most Tippmann's use is a bit counter-intuitive. Well, maybe that's not the right word, but it's backwards from the way most other paintball markers adjust velocity (screwing something in, usually to compress the mainspring, raises velocity). Most Tippmann markers use a "choke" style adjuster - screwing it in obstructs airflow and lowers the velocity and screwing it out allows more airflow and increases velocity.
Anyway, assuming the adjuster is all the way out, yes, you probably need a stiffer mainspring, a lighter valvespring, or both. Standard Nelson springs, IIRC, are not an exact fit, but I've successfully trimmed a coil or two from a Nelson valve spring and used it in an SL-68 II. Mainsprings might be a direct swap, but match up the length to be sure.
If you want to use 12-grams (and get decent efficiency), I'd say stick with the existing (or a slightly heavier) valvespring and throw in a heavier mainspring. I never ran mine on 12-grams, but it always seemed a bit inefficient, esp. considering it's essentially a Nelson valved gun, which are usually very efficient. I typically used a 7 oz tank and would usually get between 400-500 shots (depending on the ambient temp, how much shooting I did, and how often I shot) out of it before velocity starting suffering badly.
Wycke - I screwed that thing all the way out and I was barely getting over 200 fps. I think I saw a spring kit on tippmannparts.com so I'll probably hit them up for those parts. This was an old rental that looks really beat up (it doesn't even have a safety) but it still shoots well. I'm gonna strip it and see what needs to be replaced.
Thanks for the help.
What is EMR?
ok did a fast search its a Paintball park? They have a pro shop?
EMR is like the Mekka of pump.
Show me the way, if my guess wasnt right. sorry about the hijack. I'll PM
Got a few more q's about upgrades:
1.) Is there an aftermarket bolt or bolt upgrade that was made?
2.) Any upgrades to the guts of the marker that would improve performance?
1. Aftermarker bolt for a nelson? What difference would a bolt make anyway?
2. Not sure what performance you would want to improve. You can improve efficiency by decreasing the ammount of space the CO2 has to fill up (The build in expansion chamber for example), but that's pretty much it.
After you replace the springs it will be running like a champ, there isn't much you can upgrade on an SL68II, but it is a tank and does not need any upgrades. When I was using mine, I found that I even preferred the stock barrel. You could get a loudener for kicks though, the SLs have a unique *clack* sound that is fun to scare people with.
