mod 85 question

Hi

I just bought a mod 85. My question is does anyone know how to reload the reusable cartridges? I got a couple of hundred rounds but they dont make them anymore. Maybe someone else has one and could tell me were I might get paint and primers?

Heres a description of the Mod 85 for anyone who doesn't know what it is.

Thanks

you really need a reloading kit that was made for it. your not going to find paint for it. the primers used are a Large Magnum pistol primer. they are easy to get. good luck reloading the old cases though... most of them will be too brittle and not make it through the reloading process without cracking.

The stock round is a .375 caliber paint capsule, which doesn't exist anywhere else. A couple of people here (Legion I think, and..CCMachinist?) were looking at converting them to RAPs .40 caliber (Welcome to Real Action Marker paintball) and reloading them, but I don't know if they ever got very far. Apparently replacing the primer with a pistol primer and using a slightly larger ball wasn't so much the issue as the plastic casings would crack/burst from the pressure.

That, coupled with the fact that the velocity was well over 300fps (375-425 if I recall?) means you pretty much have a really badass wall hanger

I ended up getting two of these Mod85's.They are pretty cool.I took one of the cartridges apart and it is quite complex for what it does. The primer didn't have an anvil in it.It looks like they used berdan primers. Then they made this external anvil to set it off.All this was probably done to get it passed thru the ATF? Also you would have to go thru paraordance to get reloading supplies (probably the real reason). Otherwise I think they would have used a more common primer setup.
Anyway I think the shells could be machined from brass or aluminum and use a common primer and make it shoot rubber balls then you don't have to worry about putting baffles in the case.I really don't think it was intended for paintball games. It shoots so fast you couldn't carry enough clips and ammo. But it is a #10 on the Grin scale.

It is on my list of things to do and I have a long list.

This video has been on here before and it is still fun to watch.

i thought the same thing until i found a reloading kit with instructions. it doesn't use a Berdan style primer. the primer they use is a large pistol primer... nothing special about it.

Great information fellows. I will check back with the friend I bought it from and see if he has the reload kit. I know theres some never used casings and theres a package of some kind of wadding, some springs, and 6 clips. In any case I do have 350 or so rounds. I own a metal working shop so I may be fashioning replacement ammo from more readily available materials. It will go on my very long list, Lol.

Definitely knew that I was getting something that would become a conversation piece. I never thought I would point it at anyone because of the FPS. Just hoping to extend its life a bit longer. Its got plenty of cool.

If you have instructions could you email them to me? Maybe scan them?

Thanks

The cartridge I took apart didn't have an anvil in the primer. That's what made me think it was a berdan. It must have fallen out and i didn't catch it.

You don't need a reloading kit, really... And they use shotgun primers by the way. I've had good luck making my own casings, too, so that shouldn't be too hard provided you have a little experience in that area.
