Re finishing 3.5 oz tank?

Hey, i just bought me a used 3.5 oz co2 tank for $10! Good deal.
Any way, it's a little roughed up though. It's got wear and tear scratches and marks on it. It's the brushed aluminum color so yeah.

I was thinking of refinishing it like giving it a polish or a VERY light sand at at my school's metal shop then lacquering it or something. The thing I'm not sure of is if i sand it will it compromise any thing on it? Or will a little layer of metal off not kill it and/or me.

Thanks for helping guys.

I second that. Both polishing and sanding will remove material from it. If you wanted to smooth it out I would recommend several layers of primer before painting it. You could sand the primer after 5-6 coats.

Thanks for the warning guys. But are you positively sure even the littlest finish would be too risky? like just a light touch and spin on the sander?

Steele wool won't hurt it if yo want to keep it metallic. Hard annoing it would strengthen the surface.

Steel wool could work for me. But it'll be really hard to keep it straight and all because i want to give it back the brand new brushed aluminum look that makes it look like it was machined. (the kind you see on stainless steel kitchen knives) With steel wool it would have to be sanded by hand and it'll be really hard to keep it straight/consistent.

would you rather pay $35 for a new tank or lose a finger?

i see no issue with light sanding/polishing...

sometimes, people are a little overly paranoid about safety when it comes to tanks...

If you hydrotested it right afterwards, I don't think there would be a problem.
