Sheridan questions

I want to get my p68 and a PGP powercoated. Is the factory solder high enough temp rated for powder coating. Is it silver solder? Or does the body need to be resolder with silver solder before getting powder coated?

Please advise. Thanks guys

Timmy

Go for Duracoat instead. It's much better for Sheridans (AND much more durable).

yes, the solder will melt if powdercoated. it will have to be resoldered with silver solder.

i'm with Chef, get it Duracoated instead of powdercoated.

Duracoat= Extremely tough , yet easy to do with little prep work....

I thought that the factory solder wouldn't hold up. Thanks for the info.

I would Durocoat it, but I want a special powder coating.

Can we say. Rainbow............

Thanks again guys.

Also, who around here is good at silver soldering?

I found a place that can do something similar to this on brass, but it needs to be silver solder

It will cost a small fortune to get both guns resoldered. the guns have to be desoldered (even the valve rention threads must be done) Figure 300 to be a bargan to basicaly build new guns.

The factory solder will hold up to powder coating. I've done a few with no issues. It's the real early Sheridan's that have problems. Due to silver solder not being a standard grade of solder and lead still being a common thing back then.

So in short it realy depends on how old of a pgp and p68 it is.

When I was attempting to have my Hurricane built last year, I discussed this very issue with Craig Palmer on the phone. He said that when they have attempted to Powdercoat Sheridans without re-soldering, sometimes even the valve solder would bleed out right through the finish, ruining it. He told me that to PC a Hurricane would mean that it would have to be a scratch-built gun with silver solder, which they would nickel plate, and then PC. Good luck!

Rainman may have different experience, which may be entirely accurate, but if you're going for a special Powdercoat, may as well do it right without taking a chance!
