Unhappy New ATS Owner, Troubles Already

My Christmas present to myself, which arrived in the mail this afternoon, is a used AT-85. First thing is when I took off the barrel and looked at the unisizer there was nothing in it, as in my unisizer appears to just be an aluminum sleeve so i guess I need a new one, just not sure at all how someone managed to do that one. Now then the real problem seems to be with the mag chain. A few of the paddles are bent and its causing the gun to jam, I also managed to chop a ball, not sure if it was a result of the bent chain or not. I am wondering if there is any way to straighten back out the paddles, I really don't want to have to get a new mag on top of a new unisizer.

But its still an awesome gun , the gun gassed up with no leaks and sounds beautiful.

The older guns did not come with a unisizer. They came with 4 different sizing rings for the barrels. The unisizer is not that expensive. I know that Gumby has them, and I would guess that Loud Thunder has them for sale as well. The lugs of the chain can be straighten. Be careful, and gentle but you can straighten them with a pair of needle-noise pliers.

Hope this helps....welcome to the family.

Unisizers are just metal sleeves, or at least mine is the same. My At-85 started killing the finger lifting thingies until I figured out what was wrong.

My guide plate had a blown spring, and the mag had slipped a link causing it to not index correctly. After replacing the guide plate, and correctly adjusting the magazine chain it cycles fine. Oh, and just adjust those links with your fingers. Be gentle.

I was also suffering velocity issues, and realised I was missing the bolt seal and sleeve pad. You may want to check those too.

Hmm well sadly mine only came with one, and I am getting rollouts like crazy with it.

But thanks for the welcome, I have been waiting to join for a long time.

just treat it like a pump and put a little electrical tape over the barrel lip.

Be sure to read the owners manual. You may want to order a spare guide plate or two when you buy your unisizer. I was going through one or two a year when I was running with my ATS full time.

Ran with that idea and made some finger nail polish widgets we'll see how it goes. Went through the manual, took it most of the way apart and cleaned it up.

Also I keep finding conflicting things about dry firing the gun with and without a mag,so just to clarify for me what is the proper proceedure for gassing up my gun?

Do not gas it up with the mag in or you will instantly ruin the guide plate. Remove mag, gas marker, then insert the mag. Now, you will be ready to dry fire with the mag installed. It is not recommended that you dry fire for long periods of time or without the mag istalled. While it is pressurized you can remove the mag as much as you like. Just do not gas with the mag in.

Also, it is extremely critical that the fingers in the mag are straight and that the mag is indexed when inserting. If not, this will give you all kinds of trouble. One finger bent too far will be enough to chop balls as well as jam the marker. After each day of use, inspect the mag and straighten any fingers that need it.

The best method to straighten the lugs is with a needle nosed pliers between the chain links and using your fingers to gently bend the lug back into place. Use the plier's jaws to prevent the links from compressing as you bend the lug, so have them on the side you are bending towards.

The original sizers were smooth aluminum and the uni-sizer uses a standard sizer 'blank' that has been machined first then a urethane gland molded in place.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I think I have it ready for play again.

I have just one more question, I would like to mount a sling, I was thinking of using one of the side screws that holds in the rear housing, and somehow making a mount on the shroud at 90* to the front sight. Does anyone have any suggestions/better ideas for this?
