I'm thinking more like large holes instead of porting. Hell, maybe just cutting the barrel down and putting a loudener on would help.

It's already a 4", any shorter and I wouldn't be able to hit the broad side of an...anything, really.

Porting can increase the noise level if you direct the escaping air towards the target. Think of it like this, as you put holes in the barrel more air is required to achieve the same velocity. More air helps to increase the report, just make sure you angle the holes so they point forwards, not easy but I've done it before.
