Nightmare Valve Question - Purely Technical

So, I heard somewhere the Nightmare is a hybrid between Nelson and Sheridan valves. Is this so? How does the Nightmare valve work? I'm just curious, and don't have one lying about to dissect.

Not really. It's a Crosman valve. The valve design evolved into what is powering Tippmann's Pro Am, Pro-Lite, Carbine etc. Also prolific in Mokals.

best i have is a tear-down of an aga62, still the basic crosman 357 valve assembly though... basic stubby power tube setup, pressure's held in check by both the cup seal and the o-ring on the power tube...

That's the valve. Not the best picture, but that's both assembled and exploded views.

These diagrams are not mine, but show the difference pretty well:

"Nelson" valve layout:
Inline, hammer and bolt forward of the valve:
Examples: Phantom, ATS85

"Sheridan" valve layout:
Stacked, hammer behind, bolt above valve:
Examples: Cocker, Timmy, Spyder

"Crosman" valve layout:
Inline, hammer behind, bolt forward the valve:
Examples: Nightmares, Tippmanns

"Sterling" valve layout:
Stacked, hammer forward the valve, bolt above:
Examples: Sterling, Vector, Rainmaker

There are exceptions, and these only apply to guns using hammers to open poppet valves.

I personally wouldn't put the nightmare valve in the same category as either tippmann style valve.

The old style tippmann valve (as pictured above), has two cup seals and, well, floats. Hammer hits it, valve get's squished between the hammer and powertube assembly, both cup seals open a bit. Back one does recock, front does firing. Newer tippmann valves only have one rear cup seal, and are locked in place. Hammer hits, cup seal opens, some gas goes out the back for recock, rest gets routed around the outside of the valve body for firing the ball.

A nightmare valve, originally a crossman valve, but also used on Stingrays, Titans, Mirages, Mega-z's, and others, only has one seal on the back like the newer tippmann valves, but it's not a cup seal. It's ring shaped and on the valve cap. A hollow valve pin/power tube is pressed against it. Hammer hits the valve pin and gas gets directed down the center of the valve pin/power tube and out the valve to fire. On semi-auto variants some of the gas goes around the valve pin for recock.

I agree. Just couldnt find a simple TIppmann animation, in the same general size, layour, color as the others.... except that older dual poppet style. The idea was more for the general bolt/hammer orientation, as how it translates to later styles.

Granted... I just realized I have my own that might work better:
