| MCB Member | bolt assembly question
hey everybody, hope you all had a great holiday season... I had a thread a few months ago about my bolt being chipped in my buzzard. I received the new bolt/hammer assembly from carter. I installed the entire new assembly and I had an autotrigger problem. The snub was all the way back flush against the valve. I took it back apart and looked at it side by side with my old assembly (which still functions properly). The new assembly is significantly shorter... with a shorter spring and what seems to be a different cut into the bolt where the spring sits in it. I can post pictures if this seems strange and no one knows what I'm talking about. Are all carter bolt/hammer assemblies universal in all his markers? I remember asking for a buzzard assembly, but I guess it could have changed with the new mini buzzards. Like I said the marker still functions properly with the old chipped bolt, but i'd like to replace it before it potentially gets worse. For the record, I also tried just replacing the old bolt with the new bolt, but that didn't work either... the old hammer and sear would not work with the bolt. I believe I have read that they are machined as a matching pair so that would explain that. Anyway, sorry for rambling and I would appreciate any insight. thanks

Hmm, I would suspect that Carter might have changed some things since moving from buzzards to mini-buzzards. A pic would be most helpful. I recommend dropping a pm to Demonio.

How good are you with doing work yourself? If the bolt otherwise functions and chambers the paint, you could modify your trigger (or sear) to trip it at the right point... You'd just need files and a way to polish it up once you're finished.

Earon has tweaked the internals over the years. The new aluminum bodies have slightly larger internals than the SS bodies.

here is a pic... after further tinkering I don't think the length is the issue... I think it is the shape of the sear on the new assembly (on left)... thoughts? and thanks to those that have replied, much appreciated.

before you do that, try punching the sear pins out, and swapping sears between the old hammer and new hammer.

most commonly over looked consideration is timing. Or distance between the bolt's face/barrel and sear. I've found on many occasions with Carters that playing/switching bolt orings can help with some sear tripping issues, be it self AT'ing, or just plain won't fire... Your issue may easily be alleviated by simply switching to a fatter oring. If that doesn't work, try going the opposite direction.
