Origins of the Hawaiian Shirt?

So since stumbling on this site a few years ago in search of a PGP, I've done my best to become one of you. I lust for vintage gear and brass and shoot pumps more often than not. I've also taken to wearing the traditional garb of the MCB warrior, the mighty Hawaiian shirt. At first I was nervous making such a bold fashion statement, and chose a more subdued green or brown shirt that still blended in well. After a while I dove in and started searching out the boldest or most hideous shirts I could find. My fav moment so far was waiting to start a game and having three younger players from the other team mocking me in my Hawaiian with a redux in hand and a WTF gauntlet on one arm. "Dude where is your camo? You must be a noob! You have to pump that gun for each shot? That thing isn't a scope? Your gun sucks! You're going to be the first one out for sure! You are only bringing 50 rounds?! Bro, I tote a 1000 rounds for each round and mow muppets with lasers from my gat!" The wise older ref who's affiliated with a local pump tourney team broke it down: "Boys, here's a little tip: if you see a guy standing there in a loud Hawaiian shirt with a stock class gun and a few tubes of paint, you might wanna look out, because he probably knows what he's doing." The smiles went away as they started to get what he was saying. I'm no champ on the field, but I'm not a chump either. I represented well enough and all three lads were out by the end of the game and I was nice and clean on the winning team with 3 elims from the 11 rounds I fired.

After the game they asked me more about how long I'd been playing and why I wore Hawaiian and I told them about this fine place and the gents that frequent it. They asked who started the tradition and why, and I had no real answer I could give them, other than it was kind of a representation of the mindset around here.

Sooooo.... How did it all get started? When was the first Hawaiian shirt fielded and by whom? I assume it was our fearless leader but would love to hear the tale!

The more I think about it, I think I have maybe heard before that the Hawaiian shirt thing is for the OG paint ballers. We don't move as fast as we used to, so you be as loud and bright as possible so the people come to you. Loudeners used to be big on guns too. For some reason, HurtCow comes to mind when I start thinking OG paintball players. Haha. I might be off in my assessment, so hopefully one of the more seasoned members can chime in

The first Hawaiian shirt on a Paintball player I ever saw was at the PMI Nationals in August '88. There was some bearded guy in a pair of British DPM pants that had the seams let out partially so they had a sort of "fringe" down the legs shooting one of those decked-out Nelspots in the side-folding stocks.

He succumbed of my Bushmaster once in the prelims and once in the semis.

I can't remember the team he played on but they were all sort of a "rag-tag" group. Many different guns, many different clothing options. They didn't actually look like a "Team", but a piecemeal group.
