Getting the proper hammer/valve spring balance for 12g's...

This isn't necessarily a phantom-oriented question but since this forum seems to have the biggest 12g and valve related knowledge base, I figured I'd ask it here.

How does one know which way to go with which spring for a given velocity curve?

For example: Marker A starts ridiculously high and drops by a few fps every shot, until empty, while Marker B maintains a pretty steady plateau until having one or two duds at the end of 12g and gassing out entirely.

Or, in the case of my DSG: I was getting 20 or so shots with the stock springing, and decided to gamble on using a stiffer valve spring (blue cocker spring). Velocity would actually start in the 240's, creep to 290 in the middle, and then start to fade back again. This was consistent and repeatable but also gave on average 5 extra shots per 12g.
