I run mine like your "ghetto" version, works fine. Have a read of the smoothing out phantom pump stroke sticky. That way you can use the lightest possible return spring. Nelson's will never be as smooth as you can get a cocker but you can get close

What you did will work, the only issue may be how strong of a spring you used and length of the spring.
Too long of a spring may not let it cock, and if it is a strong spring it may make it harder to pump.

Great marker have fun.
Side note try out one of rainman's kits if you get a chance too. To me they feel better, and you can use ccm grips on it to color match plastics..
Just my preference though.

I am having a similar issue, but I don't understand where to install the return spring.
I currently have two phantoms with undercocking. The first is a rainman, and it works great. The second is an older kit made by bigoldskool, and it has a problem returning the pump handle. I see the white washer on the rod, but I don't understand where the return spring would be installed? Is it exposed like the spring on the guide rod or is it hidden?

I received the return spring from Mike and I'm still having the same problem, even with the return spring installed.

Um, excuse me?

How does my not knowing why being 52 and a Marine has anything to with a spring preference mean something was way over my head?

I know plenty of people who don't use a return spring, it comes down to preference, really.

Phantoms are plenty smooth, what they don't have is light pump strokes. Most people confuse the extra weight with smoothness, however.

Using no pump return spring + a blue main spring is the easiest way to lighten a Phantom's pump stroke, but you might have trouble getting up to velocity with the blue spring.

I like the return spring on my Phantom, and an actual CCI spring would probably help your handle forward a bit more than the Spyder one you currently use.

Another thing to look at, what barrel are you using? (Sorry if it's been answered, I skimmed through most of the thread) I've noticed that with my 681 Lapco barrel, I have to help it forward a little bit to get it all the way closed because of the tighter bore. Might be something to look into.

Update!

Fixed the problem with the spring Mike gave me. Instead of only showing 8 threads like your suppose to, I choose to leave 15-16 threads.

Blue = lighter
Silver = default (middle)
Red = heavier

This is for the CCI springs. Other spring kits may vary.
