Splattttttt ... maybe he uses "rare earth magnets" ... but even so I don't know if they have the force necessary to push and hold the pump forward. But it is a good thought.

No there is more then enough force there.
I played around with some really, really powerful magnets before and even two relatively very small ones would be enough to provide a nice return,

Then there you go.

I know you can get quality magnets that have lots of force. I guess it's just been too long (probably 20 years) since I've played around with magnets. Might be time to buy a sample pack from one of the science stores again.

I believe I got mine from here, it's been a while. They are absolutly the most powerful i've seen you really have to be careful with them. The warnings are well justified.
United Nuclear - Neodymium magnets
Expensive as hell but well worth it.

they are slipped on, comes off in no time, doesn't require any modification to the gun at all.

Of all the unique items we offer for sale, we consider these items the most dangerous of all. Our normal packing & shipping personnel refuse to package these magnets - our engineers have to do it. This is no joke or exaggeration - and we cannot stress it strongly enough. You must be extremely careful - and know what you're doing with these magnets.
Two Supermagnets can very easily get out of control, crush fingers and instantly break ribs or even your arm if opposing poles fly at each other.

A small child recently lost his hand when his father left two # 31 supermagnets unattended. The child picked one up and when he approached the other magnet on a nearby table,
it became airborne and obliterated his small hand.

That is Awesome. And what is wrong with return springs again?
