| MCB Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Southern Maine | Electro-Montneel I was going to make the title "Icon-E", just to be funny, but I don't think most would get the joke. I don't usually play in the winter, because I am a sissy. So, I'll get bored, and tinker. I've been toying around with making an Electro-Z, so I figure I'd give it a try. Technically, I ALREADY made an electro-Z, way back in 1994. I strapped a 12v DC motor to the vert ASA of my MegaZ, then carved a piston rod out of a toothbrush, that attached from the motor, to the trigger shoe. I wired a switch into the grip, and worked perfect..... except it was full-auto only, and the local field (AGNH) did not allow it... The concept is simple: Take a generic E-Spyder frame, and make it fit into a Montneel gun. Conversions like this are pretty common, and simple with MOST guns. Here is the donor gun: Unfortunetly, there are some issues specific to Montneels that make this more challenging then other conversions First: The stock trigger frame is "structural". Meaning, the forward and rear receiver bolt TO THE FRAME, which holds in the valve. WHen the hammer hits the valve, it pushes directly against the forward receiver, causing a great deal of stress. So, the stock frame is large, and beefy Other issues is that the sear, relative to the trigger is much farther apart on the stock trigger then on E-Frames, and the mount screws are much farther apart. Another issue is the FPS adjuster screw is partially attached to the stock frame. Here is the E-Frame lined up to the body: You can see that nothing comes close to lining up. The good news is that if I HOLD the frame against the receiver, the sear does catch and properly release the hammer. Here is a better view: The frame itself sits nicely on the rear receiver, but, clearly nothing lines up. THe biggest problem here is that there is no way to secure the forward receiver. SO, an adapter bracket that goes from the existing forward receiver mount, to the forward eframe mount will have to be fabricated. Another issue is the FPS adjuster, but I think that it can just be replaced with a shorter version. YOu never adjust FPS on Montneels anyway. The REAR mount is another big issue. It looks like I can just drill/tap a hole into the rear receiver BUT I'D RATHER NOT. I'd like to figure out a way to make the EFRAME fit without having to modify the Montneel in any way. One idea I have is to drill a new hole in the frame to match the existing hole. That should work as long as there is nothing vital in the way. OTherwise, I'll just drill into the receiver. The last issue is the structural thing. I don't think the EFrame is strong enough. Its pot-metal. One solution I have is to use the STOCK frame, and cut it into pieces, and use those pieces as "brackets" for the EFRAME. So, hopefully, the modified stock frame can still support the forward, and rear-receiver, but the EFrame will actuate the hammer? Hopefully, it will look something like this: Hmm..... I just noticed that it looks very.. "Mokal-ish". EDIT: I was originally going to convert my Mega-Z, but that had a whole seperate set of issues. On MegaZs, the trigger frame is ALSO used to support the VERT ASA, and quick-release cam, along with the upper receivers. I figured I'd start with the Z-1, and work my way up. nick |

SO, I don't want to add any space between the EFrame and upper receivers. The other solution I considered was to make an adapter plate that wraps AROUND the eframe. Then bolts to the EFrame via horizontal screws, but does not add any space between the receiver and EFrame. |

| The Brown Guy! | Can't you do the whole adapter plate thing and make a new sear?

| Seasoned Member | Drill out the rear hole in the frame to fit the screws in the body of the Z. Mill off the rounded part of the frame (as the bottom of the montneel body is flat, and the frame is contoured to fit a spyder body). Mill a simple bracket that will screw into the front reciever of the Montineel, goes over the front screw hole in the frame, and thread them both and run a bolt between them. No modification to the gun body, only to the frame. If you dont have access to a mill, or proper tools, I'd be happy to do it. Picture of what I mean. ![]()
