Brass Freak compatible insert

The sales thread is located here.

Ok...

I have been experimenting with methods for creating brass Freak compatible inserts.

Here is the prototype... 0.739" OD and 0.675" ID by 5.0625" long (Just like the SP ones.)

This is a prototype. I am not sure I can produce these in any significant quantity, for a reasonable price. This one was about 2 hours work, not including any of the equipment I had to build to make this one.

Since someone will ask, I will sell this prototype. I would NOT recommend purchasing it until I have determined if I can produce more of them. The price tag right now is $50 shipped. If I can produce these, then the price will go down.

Wow. Very cool!

What's the weight difference compared to a regular aluminum one?

from my attempt at doing this, I'm going to agree that 50 sounds like a very reasonable price. man its a bitch to work on such a long thin piece. I still have my attempt on my desk with the nice bend in it and the sweet lines from spinning in the chuck after the nice bend was formed.

PM'd you back cjottawa.

I've been working on a different process than turning down barrel stock. As you pointed out, Leafy, it makes a mess more often than a good insert. Plus it seems to eat up a load of hours to make it happen.

I am out to shovel snow today, and will not be doing any work in the shop until later tonight. At that point, I hope to make another test run or two and see if I can finalize the process for making these inserts. At that point I plan to work on making .680 inserts, in addition to the .675 I can make now.

The best way I can think of doing the outside turning is with the tool holder that braces behind the work piece, typically to prevent deflection. I forget what its called though and when I went to try doing mine I couldnt find on in the shop. and then couple that with a piece of solid stock machined to be a tight fit into the bore and either held in by the slight crush from the chuck or some sort of temporary adhesive.

Leafy... Look up expanding mandrel. It will help you.

As to weight, I am not exactly sure. I would guess about 1/3 more, due to brass being about 1/3 denser than aluminium.

I'd rather not say about how I finished the bore, as it has taken about a year's worth of experimenting to figure it out.

Normally I would tell all, but this time open source would be very detrimental to business. I will say that the process I am using is widely published on the web and has been used for years. the issue I overcame was scaling it down to hobbyist size and budget.

I will post pictures in a while.
