Montneel Pump

Another weekend, and another project.
Can you tell that I really hate playing in the snow?

Pump kits are pretty common. I've seen them on all the major semis like Mags, Cockers, Tippmans, and Spyders.

I'm like to play some pump-only events, but I've sold off the last of my pumps.
So, I figure it should be too difficult to convert one of my Montneels?

The goal is to convert to pump, without doing any modifications that are not reversable. And, it has to be made from parts laying around my garage, because I'm a cheap bastard.

So, I pump a piece of plastic pipe for the pump. A peice from a wire coat hanger makes the perfect connecting rod, and I get this:

No, not the prettiest looking conversion. But this is only after 15 minutes worth of work. Notice I cut small channels into the bolt-link cover, as well as the feedblock for the pump rod to travel through. I made those cuts using my metal grinder, by hand. Luckily... I still have that hand because those parts got WICKED HOT.

I didn't have a good way to attach the rod to the pump, so I simply heated up the rod (via the stove top), and MELTED IT into the pump. Its held in place by the feedblock.

So far, it actually works pretty well. When gas up, it would cock and fire. Though, the hammer is till 100% blowback, so you would expect that to still work anyway.

Once I sand down the rough edges, it might actually look pretty good. Except for that pump. but, free is free.

Neat.
I was thinking of cutting channels out of the sides of the breach and tapping the bolt on both sides so I could use a dual pump rod pump, like from an SI or similar(assuming the length lines up). More work, but a similar result plus a nicer pump.

I thought of the same, but didn't think I had enough skill to cut 2 channels into the sides.

So, I went with the Tippmann/Phantom style pump rod instead. That way, if i convert back to semi, the cuts would hardly be noticable.

Though, a Bushmaster-style pump would have another advantage:
You would be able to swap back and forth between pump and semi by simply swapping the forward receiver, or even just swapping the bolt.
You could leave in the stock linkage since it would not touch the bolt when running in pump mode.

I had to remove the bolt link since it would have hit the pump rod. I can still remove the forward receiver, in case I chop a ball, but to convert back to semi, I'd also have to remove the link cover, and reinstall the stock linkage.

Exactly how Montneel did it.

I'm thinking I'll probably have someone cut the reciever and tap the bolt for me. I was thinking along the same lines with swapping out the breach and reciever to be able to swap between pump and semi. I have a nice extra breach that'll work nicely I think.

I suppose your reffering to the one you saw at the EMR museum last weekend? I thought the original Montneel pump(Jmarc) was basically another Nelson. Was the one you saw a factory conversion of a Z1?

The one at EMR is a pre-Montneel Bushmaster clone.

Marcus was apparently fanatical about the "square body" look, which is why everything from the pump, to double-action, to semi, to blowforward, had that same square body.

True, it makes it look unique, but it also makes the receiver mounts FAR more likely to strip.
