That's a slick looking machine. A size that you won't outgrow as a hobby machinist. A wise choice. So often folks pick a budget priced small machine and then end up realizing they should have gone bigger. And anyone that has a machine tool can tell you that you spend a lot more money on tooling than the machine. And if your move up the food chain involves a change in tapers and other sizes for the tooling it can get expensive in a hurry. So much for your Internet time now. Those things are addictive in the extreme.

Yes this is an upgrade for me, I sold two smaller machines to pay for this one. The big incentive is the one inch spindle bore, and the one horsepower 110 volt motor (biggest in its class). I have been machining since 1995, this machine opens up my capabilities quite a bit. I already have all the tooling i need from previous machines. I doubt i will devote any more time than i do already.

| MCB Member Join Date: Oct 2006 | I know what you mean about the freedom a larger machine offers. I went from a start on a Myford to one of the chinese 12x36 lathes that I have now and will likely have for as long as I can manage to keep my shop going. It's all I'll ever need. The Myford was a PAIN! When cutting steel it would set up a horrendous chatter at the slightest sign of too heavy a cut. I shimmed the bearings (plain babbit style) and checked the clearances but nothing helped. In searching around apparently everyone had issues with them that way. Lots of "cures" are around. But for me the cure was a new machine. I realized very early on with the Myford that I was beginning to accumulate a lot of tooling that was machine specific. So I went shopping for a machine that I could tool up and not outgrow. I don't know about these machines today but when I got mine I soon realized that there was a lot of grit through the machine. I ened up completely stripping it down so no two parts were together and rebuilding it. The oil in all the parts was gritty to the point of being like grinding paste. Hopefully the new machines are better than that. But you may want to check just in case. Oh, and my little ribbing was because Manuel is how you spell the common Mexican boy's name.

Inspect the spindle on yours. 1-inch through bore be damned; on my little one, you can safely ream the spindle out to something like 1-1/8". You can get more out of yours, I'm sure. Plus, still no quick-change toolpost on yours!
