Talking A Pistol Worthy of a General 2

This is the second Pistol for a General to be issued at ION. This year Pete Murhpy, aka Field Marshal Pete, former General of the German forces at Skirmish was honored with a special Luger PG (PGP) for his service. Pete Murphy has demonstrated and continues to demonstrate the qualities as ambassador of the sport. He's a good man and a phenomenal player. Below is the "composing process of his Luger PG.

Ok, the project is a go. I just received the Siler Frame arrived and the PGP is en route.

A bundle of potential project PGs and PGPs finally arrived. When I choose markers for projects or for my personal arsenal, I pick the ones with personality. I can't explained it any better than this. I can just tell that a marker has personality or not but holding it and sighting down the barrel and dry firing it (if possible). The two pistols that stood out for me in this lot were these:

A PGP and a PG. Both have seals that are dry rotted and can't fire because the mechincals are all siezed up. But for some reason the PG stands out more to be in how it feels. I was able to free up the actions and the PG dry fires with a punch. So my choice for this project is going to the PG. It just has more attitude.

I gutted the PG. It still has paint in it and it is DIRTY and grimey.

I will start the hot work on this asap. I am on a VERY tight schedule with this.

Let the fun begin.

This past weekend, I spent a TON of time of time on Pete’s Pistol. I have to finish the construction of the pistol and have it shooting asap so I can send it off to have a holster made for it. So here’s the pics of the process:

Separating the feed tube from the rest of the assembly –

So after all the solder is cleaned off, this is what I have to convert to side feed –

But first, I have to reinforce the Exhaust port before enlarging it for more air flow –

And Then –

Once all of that hot work was done, I have to modify the ball feed from top to Right side (Similar to a KP2 ) –

I had to be careful on moving the port. The port has to be very low and the barrel tubing does not have much to keep the rear part of the barrel strong. I reinforced the bottom of the rear barrel tube with brass wire and Silver Solder.

Next, I used a piece of valve tubing as a sleeve to cover the top feed port –

And then I gently opened the Side feed up for incoming paintballs –

Now the body is ready for mounting of the side feed tube -

Soldering the side feed onto the body -

*NOTE – I find that using extra flux prevents one from using TOO much solder.

I had the pleasure of firing a German Luger once. If you have seen one, it has a little extra metal on the exterior of the muzzle. I tool piece of valve tubing and cut it to slip on to the PG barrel tip and soldering it into place – see Pics –

The Stock bolt for the PG is pitted pretty bad. I will have to replace the bolt with a custom made one since the PG bolts a fatter than the newer PGP bolts. I am thinking of Delrin since it will not corrode and stick. And it is a quicker turn around time too.

A rough idea of what the pistol is going to look like –
Remember - the Siler Frame is a Cocker frame, so to be able to mount the frame to the PG body, a body rail is needed –

From what I know about these markers, the PGs with NO Markings predate 1986-85 and were most likely the first of the PGs ever made. So this means that what Pete is getting has a historical significance to it and is a Pistol that is 25 years old more or less. Wow.

Other Brass enthusiasts critique that when doing the act of soldering, less solder is what you want. I agree there, with one exception - I use solder to also act as a body filler or to sculpt a desire contour to the marker body. Sculpting with hot silver solder is very tough to do. Not many can do it. I am a sculpter. I have been since I was 15 yrs old. And working with a propane torch and silver solder is like sculpting with an arc welder - dangerous, risky, fun and so rewarding in the end game.

Now for the pics -

BELOW - the thread of the PG body were crudded up and not deep enough. So I retapped to clean the threads and tapped deeper.

With adding the "muzzle bump" to the tip of the barrel, I had create clearance for the feed tube end cap and the 12 gram extended knob.

With the custom made brass end cap -

I also installed the quick strip slotting for the bolt. I had to built of the left side of the body to reinforce what I will be making. I have started doing the two notch modification, like an "F" down on its face, instead of the L. I find this works better and there is no accidental pump/removing the bolt unintentionally.

After some sanding and filing away of excess solder -

And another overall look at what the pistol will look like when finished -

I still have more sanding to do and internal polishing to do before I can finish the assembly. In the meantime, I made a dummy pistol to be sent off so a holster can be made for it.

And the time logged in on the project - 74 hours so far.

First, I spent a lot time sanding and smoothing out the rough spots and excess solder.

Then restoring the antiquish factory Petina finish, which I have been told is a carcinogen, so I guess I should quit spike my tea with the stuff -

Stock valve with the small stock ports -

The same Stock valve with "larger" ports - hehe

One thing with a marker this old - - -

As you can see the 12 gram puncture face seal is dry rotted. When I took the mark apart, the seal pristine until I poked at it with a pic when the seal just crumbled. Oh well...I was going to change the seal anyway

New Valve Spring, Cup seal and smileyized valve spring -

Changed out the crudded up and oxidized feed tube cap with one of my own -

Stock back plug -

Stock plug drilled out, tapped and installed a hex nut to act as a RVA. This will allow Pete to "tweak" the spring tension in the PGP. ALSO, plug was re-blued.

The inside of the PG was a bit rough looking. The camera was unable to capture the rough unfinished look. Polishing the ID of the barrel did wonders -

Now, the Barrel ID is butter smooth with zero friction. If a ball were to break in the barrel, it will just bead and after 3-4 shots the exhaust will clean up the barrel.

Before and after view of the 2 PGs that are in my possession. I bought two in case I fudged on one of them. You can see the feed tube was notched for the back loading cap.

Fully assembled, minus the Siler Frame, the pump arm and the replacement bolt -

This was the major snag areas - the Siler frame is not compatible with the style of adapter plates I have which means I have to rush it off to the my machinist friend Dan Sergison to make a special plate for the frame. Also, I need to get a custom Delrin Pump grip made. At this late in the game, it's going to be really close. One one source for these made-to-order delrin aftermarket pump grips has become too unreliable to deal with and the other possible source is going to be tough - he's not taking on any work at the moment.

With a clean stock PG bolt from another marker, the PG Luger is super super mean. I chronoed the first 15 shots and all of them were over 340 FPS. I turned down the RVA and the FPS was 294 on a full 12 gram. For those reading this, if you have ever fired a PG or a PGP, you would know that a stock PG/PGP fires with hollow "pop" sound and the balls have a distinct arching trajectory. This pistol for Pete does not go "Pop". Instead, it goes "POW" and launches the ball at a straight trajectory toward a target at 30 yards. It is dead on accurate. Evil. I could not imagine this evil little pistol going to someone more deserving of a such a marker.

And now, the some comparison pics of a "stock" PGP and a "Smileyized" PG -

Still more to come. In the mean time, I am getting the box, and plague made, but still need people to chip in on the project first. Also, for the holster, I need a German Iron Cross pin to be placed on the flap of the holster. Would Ninja know where top get such a pin?

I finished up the Pistol this weekend and the holster arrived today. Here are the pics -

The machinist returned the pistol and Siler frame with the PG fat style bolts and the slider frame adapter plate. Because of time restraints, no annodizing could be done. The adapter plate was raw aluminum and the PG fat style bolts (I ordered extra) were made from black delrin to my specifications and are beautiful -

The only thing/problem was the unannoed adapter plate. So I cannabalized my own pistol with the exact same custom plate that was black annodized -

And the plate need some tweaking to fit flat against the botton to the pistols valve tube -

Siler Frame mounted correctly -

But I had to use longer screws which was raw steel -

So I blued them -

On the gun -

Also, I had Bryan Keker fix me up a Delrin KP2/side feed tube style pump grip -

But the pump grip had to be sloted to fit into the front of the Siler frame which I did by hand. Here's the rough cutout of the slot -

Finished and cleaned up and mounted -

Polished barrel -

And the finishing touches - a matching triggershoe.

As always that is fabulous work. I love that trigger frame. Is there no sighting system? Doesn't a Luger have a little fin on that ridge on the end of the barrel? Still man....awesome.

very nice! The patch tube over the feed ports always bugged me, but having a matching end piece on the barrel tip is great. Makes it look so much better.

I'm not a machinist or a woodworker, so I don't know if it would be possible. But I think it would be bitching to have a wood block with the cutout for the pistol, then lined with felt. (this is all just from a standpoint of thinking that such a badass box is worthy of a an even cooler interior.) Maybe you could do a thing with a twelve gram and a ten round tube that is sort of like the pistol presentation boxes that have the bullets lined up in the bottom? I'm assuming you sent it to the guy, I didn't really read the reason fo rit, just the text that showed the steps. If you sent it to the guy, nothing you can do, but if you do it again, I think black or green felt and the twelve and the ten round beneath the pistol would look sweet. Also, BADASS gun.
