milling/turning 6061

how many surface feet per minute can you machine 6061? i've been looking for a machinist handbook online but i can't find one. any luck here?

doing a bit of metal work and i dont know the handbook values for some of these things.

your question is... vauge. As usual with any engineering/mechanical customization the answer is... it depends. How large a depth-of-cut are you taking? How many flutes and what diameter is your mill? Coolant? TiN coated? what size lathe tool and feed rate?

I can cut .010 at 1000FPM with a .015 cross rate no problem on my lathe with some of the simple tooling i've got. but .050? let's back down to at least 250FPM to get a nice clean finish.

So, what are you trying to do?

well, i got all the equations and such, i just needed the handbook value that ANSI publishes for 6061. using high speed steel. actually dont have anything to do with paintball, but it soon will. learning some machine shop stuff for one of my classes, im a mechanical engineering major. but next semester (after i rock this class) ill have free reign in the shop, and i have a pretty sweet list of projects stacked up.

anyway, i justed needed to know V for - N = (kV)/(piD) and MMR = kVfrT

Oh the book you're looking for (if you still want a print one) is Machinery's Handbook from Industrial Press. (It's the one that looks like 15 Gideon Bibles sewn together. Mine is a 22nd edition that I got at a garage sale for $5....I think they are up to the 27th or 29th ed....It is also available on CD-ROM.

You might also be interest in the Machinery's Handbook Guide. It's a small "Quick Reference" companion to the big book....Not as much info, but about 1/3 as big.

I payed over 100 for my copy (27ths edt)

For aluminum I find that 300 x 4/Diameter of Mill is good unless you are using carbine then take the awnser and multiply by 3.

So with a .500 EM it would be 300X4/.500 That will get your RPMs

With a Lathe just use the Dia. of the stock to be turned and take 300X4/Dia. of stock

Those are for a finish pass for roughing substitute 200 for 300.

On the feed Depending on your set up I would calculate using .015-.030 for rough and .005-.010 for Finish passes

The formula for that is RPMs*Feed*Number of teeth on your cutter.

So if you use the first formula to find your RPM you just multiply that by your feed and by number of teeth in your cutter. (use 1 for lathes)

Of course like with any thing you will have to adjust as you go.

NOTE: The above values I took from my Technology of Machine Tools 6th Edition text. (Big white book) Believe it or not for general stuff like this its actualy more helpful then the Machinery Handbook.
