Making a ram/piston return

Is there a mechanical device i can use to make an autococker ram return as soon as the throw is completed?

Unfortuantely ths isn't for an autococker but its for something using an equivalent piston. Inputs at either end. I need to make it so that as the piston completes its throw it cuts off air to the top input and start air flowing into the bottom imput. And then vice versa.

I think this can be solved relatively simply but i'm quite tired and i'm sure my design wont be as intelligent as something you guys either think of or have heard of before.

Thanks, Dom

EDIT: I will also need a way of letting each end vent while the other end gets pressure. So not only does the air have to be cut off it has to be completely open.

Drill a cross hole at the end of stroke, and use a spring to return the ram to the original position?

But wont i have to cut off the air supply to the ram to let the spring return it?

Attach a stop to the ram shaft that trips the 3/4 way to the closed position, before the gas starts venting to atmosphere.

(Welcome to steam engines)

Yeah i'm pretty much looking at steam engines.

I think some kind of extrenal 3 way would work best.

That's exactly how you would do it. Attache a three way directly to the ram. If your shade tree engineering is good, you'll source a three or four way valve with the same stroke as the ram. Otherwise, you'll have to run it off of a cam or linkage.

Is there a specific name for a larger version of a 3 way autococker valve?

Like to find a ram, i searched the term 'pneumatic cylinder'

If i search 3 way valve, it just comes up with manual valve that has 3 exhausts/ inputs but not in a linear fashion like on an autococker. they are in a T formation.

Autococker valves are 4-way valves 1-input 2-exhaust 1-central exhaust, the shape is unique for paintguns and was developed by bud orr after talking with glenn palmer. The valve used by glen on the hurricane is the humphrey 4-way detented 4ppx tac valve. You can search Humphrey's catalog for a 4-way manual valve. Clippard also makes manual valve.

Is there a kind of valve that will change output after a 180 degree turn?

Its 1 am here in hte uk and i can decide if i'm thinking straight. But can i sue this.
Alco Valves
But two outputs will be inputs. Then when the centre peice turns 180 degrees it shuts off two ports (one input one output) and opens the two other ports (one input one output)

QEV's do this or the 4-way valve has an exhaust as well
