Custom Hawaiian Shirts

I have been thinking about printing custom Hawaiian shirts and other fabric paraphernalia (“camp” shirts, bandanas/sandanas, barrel bags, strips of cloth that could be sewn onto pre-existing clothing, etc.).

Before I start this project I wanted to brainstorm some ideas with the community. Here are the ideas (both good and bad) I’ve had so far:

How to Execute:
1. Obtain material and have shirts sewn: would be too costly, would limit the variety of printed patterns and would restrict the types of things that could be made.

2. Obtain shirts and have them custom printed with a hibiscus/Hawaiian print: this is probably not feasible with a complex print such as most hawaiian prints and, again, would probably be cost prohibitive.

3. Create rubber/linoleum stamp(s) and stamp any color print onto most* textiles. *synthetic fabrics probably won’t hold the inks that are available for block printing on textiles or the inks that are color fast on synthetics are highly toxic and I would not want to use them.

4. MCB’ers don’t need/want custom Hawaiian shirts and matching fabrics, because they’re most likely to use an eclectic combination of equipment/shirts/pants/etc. this is bust, pack it up.

So far, #3 is the best idea I’ve come up with. I already have experience carving linoleum stamps. Stamps give us the opportunity to have a variety of patterns and colors. Although It may not be perfectly suited for a continuous pattern all over a shirt, a pattern of foliage and flowers could be created that would sufficiently cover the shirt. Instead of trying to cover the whole shirt, a horizontal banner across the chest and or the bottom hem or vertical banners (one or two) running from the shoulders to the bottom hem could be used as a simpler alternative.

Shirts:
Should we try to find a shirt (or shirts, pants, etc.) that the majority of the group likes to do a bulk buy? Or, should I let people decide what the want me to print onto and offer a piece by piece printing service?

Subject material for Pattern:
There are many patterns seen on Hawaiian shirts and not everyone likes the same kinds, so lets see if we can find a consensus pattern. I’d be happy to make a few stamps, but obviously I can’t do ever pattern in the book. If you would be willing to pay for the commission of a custom, one-off pattern, I’d be happy to do it.

here are my primary ideas for patterns:
Hibiscus Flowers (pretty standard)
Bird of Paradise flowers
bamboo
tropical leaves (background)
tiki heads/Polynesian masks/stylized Oceania faces
Koi

other patterns:
palm trees
cars
surfboards
sea turtles
geckos

Popular Colors:
What color shirts/fabric (background colors) would most interest you? What color inks would you like to see? Both of these may also depend upon the subject matter. White is possible, but may not be as opaque on darker/brighter fabric.

What’s a reasonable cost/what would you be willing to pay? If anyone wants something done custom, that is outside of what the masses are interested in, I would be happy to accommodate you, but price will reflect the custom nature. I haven’t strictly priced this out, but from doing some background research it looks like this should be feasible.

thanks for all your help.I hope with the community's input this will be a satisfying project for many.

mods: if this is the wrong forum for this thread, please advise as to where I should post, thanks.

In the world I see - you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway.

why not just buy pre prinited material and then get a pattern and sew them up to size? It seems like it might be easier then printing your own material

Just a thought

1. Sewing ain't for everybody

2. Sewing takes time if you don't do it regularly

3. Sewing buttonholes F'n sucks!

It would be interesting to see how well some people sew... or how badly.

that was idea #2, and for reasons Schmitti pointed out, there's no way I would be doing the sewing. I think sourcing a material and having it sewn into shirts by someone else would be cost prohibitive.

Both! T-shirts could easily be printed on, or a "camp" shirt could be used. A camp shirt is the traditional shirt that have Hawaiian print: short sleeved, button down, collared, square cut bottom shirt. Any preferences?

I can source camp shirts if there is enough interest. Possibly different colored camp shirts as well.

I'd pay good money for a tigerstripe camp shirt.

There are companies that will make you a shirt with a custom print on it. It can be done easily in bulk.

I'm sure there are a lot of players here that would pay for camo Hawaiian shirts. Or shirts with other patterns that are popular with paintball.

Let me know when you're working on flecktarn and multicam.

Hawaiian shirts, brah. If were talking about tiger stripe colored Hawaiian shirts or Hawaiian shirts infused with tigerstripe goodness, then let me know what you had in mind.

Links to said companies? (I know I'll need to put some work into researching this, but if anyone already has some info I'd appreciate it) When you say camo Hawaiian shirts, do you mean camouflage shirts with Hibiscus print on top, or do you mean a traditional hawaiian print in more mute/drab/camo colors? flecktarn and multicam are going to be reeeeeeeeally challenging to do with rubber stamps. Are you thinking hibiscus printed on flecktarn and multicam or just straight up camo camp shirts?

Lets make it happen. How do you want them to look?

My skills are not in the textile/sewing industry. I have visual art skills and I can carve stamps and stamp onto pre-existing clothing. What do you want the stamp(s) to look like? What colors should the stamps be inked in? What color(s) do you want the background (fabric of shirt, etc.) to be?
