It's been mentioned a few times, finally got some paint to sit down and do a video. I apologize for the crotch shot in part 2 ![]() I will be remaking the entire bolt system with a few minor dimensional changes for ease of machining and sending a few of them out for some independent testing. If there is any confusion on the body, it is a Vibe shell with the bottom cut flush to fit a regular Ion frame. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When running at 120psi, the first stage of the bolt has approximately 2 pounds of force. I have it set up mechanically in the demo video for 2 reasons - 1 to show that it works mechanically, and 2 to show that even with the bolt maintaining a force against the ball that it isn't doing any real damage. The bolt rebalances itself mid stroke - enough that you do NOT want to get your finger caught in the breech on the second half of the stroke. Due to the extent of the rebalancing, it should react very well to underdwelling as the bolt system is actually biased forward mid stroke. What that means is that even once air is redirected to the front of the bolt, it will continue moving forward until chamber pressure has dropped enough to allow it to reset. It would take some fine tuning of the dwell to operate that way, but could help greatly with boosting efficiency. I don't have an animation made, and don't have the software that I make them with on this computer right now, but here are shots of the stages: ![]() At rest, everything is held backward from the air in front of the bolt. Remove the air at the front of the bolt, bolt progresses forward with approximately 2 pounds of force. Until the o-ring on the bolt core passes the first port in the bolt stop. Chamber air begins to fill the area behind the bolt, significantly increasing the amount of force the bolt is being moved by. Bolt core pulls out of powertube/bolt stop and bolt slips off of powertube tip o-ring - air from both the firing chamber and behind the bolt are vented at that point. |

Cool, similar to a level 10. Quite nicely done. And only 5-6 dynamic orings.

Yeah, the tail only absolutely needs 2 o-rings, 3 just prevents it from refilling if you are firing it mechanically and have the tendency to ease off of the trigger instead of giving it a proper release. Real difference between this and a Level 10 is that there is no chamber bleed if there is a pinched ball. |

What happens if you do pinch a ball? It does reset without having to relieve the pressure behind the bolt?

That is correct from my understanding of it. The air would be returned to the front of the bolt which will reset the bolt without dumping the air. Which helps efficiency! Splendid!

You amaze me. The Ion is the Arduino of the paintball world. Just a blank canvas just now entering his renaissance.
