Lightbulb The "Trash Bin" stove project: Compleat!

Hey all,

So for the longest time, I've been wanting to get myself a nice camp stove. This one actuly.......

Lakefish Net & Twine Products: Stoves, Heaters & Fittings

But the only place I could find one localy sells "just the stove, no piping" for $90! The pipe "kit" thay offer for the stove is an extra $120!!! I said to myself "Self, your good at doing stuff. Build your own!" So I did! and this is how I did it........

I started with a few things a found around the barn, one of which being a stainless steel drum out of a large coffee brewer.

After lining the inside and out with "ribbed" steel roofing, I stuffed Insulation into half of the outside layer. I dont know if that'll do anything, but the thought was to keep the heat going only up.

Next, to make a "lid"

Now somehow, I gota keep it on.

To the piping now!

ANd we're done!

And look at that, it looks like a Trash bin! All in all, it cost me $40 in piping and rivets. After a whole day of burning, nothing burned through or melted. Yes, I put sand in the bottom. I'll get pictures of it in the tent some time!

Thanks.

Ti

Welding galvanized metal causes zinc oxide fumes that can make you sick and even kill you. I am not sure about just heating the galvanized metal. I can't find a reference for that but will look.

Oh? Really? That sucks! Would doing a good burn outside for acouple days burn off the zinc fumes enough?

Since the stove vents to the outside and not a workspace like you have with welding I think you will be okay. I think the lower temperature of the fire as opposed to welding will make it safer too. All I can find is references to welding, not burning.

I would burn it a while outside just on general principle but I think you will be okay. Just be aware and watch for any health issues like a headache or flu symptoms.

Right, Thank you for the heads up guys. I will be using this in a 10 man Canadian army tent thou, so I guess I gada really do some good burning before I can trust it for keeping me warm at night?

But really, not a bad job eh?

The galvanized particulate is also dangerous... Don't grind galvanized, don't drill galvanized. The magic temp for outgassing is far below the melting point of the steel... You cannot safely braze or solder it either.

Just be careful, man. Let that thing run hot for a while in that nice empty field.

It does look really nice, too!

I knew a guy that got falling down ill from cutting galvanized conduit. He apparently got over it just fine, but still nasty. Iirc, he said one treatment for it was something odd like drinking milk.

milk is what poison control says, but it doesn't explain if there's some chemistry behind it. hmph
