Unfortunately, I know the inserts will be more expensive. The cost of building a new machine plus the increased material usage, and the more waste due to bent and defective inserts will end up driving the cost.

Once I have a new machine, then I will be able to calculate the cost involved and generate a retail price for the inserts.

Any boring bar small enough to bore out a barrel is going to vary with tolerances when push it out over 5 inches. You will be limited to drilling honing the ID at 9" and that can be expensive as the tooling is pretty specialized. Someone who can make full length one piece barrels could do it but most places with that type of machinery usually dont do small runs so if they did it would be big bucks, real big.

The process i use is *NOT* drilling or boring. Unfortunately, I requires a specialized machine and the last, much smaller one was pretty cheap at a few thousand dollars in parts. This larger one is looking to be considerable more expensive, unless I can locate the needed pieces on the secondary market, and relatively close to home.

I found the piece I need in California... The shipping alone was over $500! Plus the cost of the item.

So, are we SOL for Ty making 9" inserts any time soon? Or is there still hope?

I am still in the game and looking. I can not afford to go the ~$10,000 I did the first time around... Fortunately, most of the current parts are reuseable. I just have to source a larger heavier frame, and the ability to generate more force. Of course I will have to scale all of the intermediate jigs and fixtures... But that is mostly time.

I will continue looking as long as there is interest. Unfortunately, there is a bit of a catch 22 here... Most people want a price to determine interest, and I can not set a price without making a few to ensure I will not work myself into the poor house. In order to make them... I have to buy the machinery, and that purchase is based on whether I feel I can make my money back from the project.

Business administration stuff sucks

Im not trying to stead business secrets, but how are the inserts made? Do you need to machine the OD, or is the stock you buy already the right size? I'm OK with only having one size for now. The real reason I want them is so I can use a 9" inception, having different bore sizes is a secondary concern.

I must custom resize the ID then cut the OD to the correct diameter. The resize process can create defective parts, so there is wasted material

The issue is the amount of force and the travel involved to make 9" inserts. As of right now, my machine maxes out at 5.5".

I could create .670, .678 and .685 inserts fairly rapidly, as that is material ID I stock. All other sizes are custom created.

What are the dimensions and tolerances needed? I can look into getting it done.
