Real quick question regarding taps

Hello all!

I need to tap a hole for 10-32 threads, and I only need about 4 or 5 complete threads, and not that deep of a hole. I have a tap that looks like this:

Can I use it to just cut the few threads, or is it possible to cut the tap down to the length I need it?

Thanks guys!

You can either get a bottoming tap or just grind the tapered tip down on a taper/plug tap. You will have to start the hole with a tapered tap then bottom it with the bottoming tap. Make sure you clear the chip from the bottom of the hole before you retap with the bottoming tap. With a 10-32 you should be able to feel the bottom of the hole but don't force it or it will break.

you really need a bottoming tap if it's a blind hole. if you try grinding the tip off a plug tap it might be a pain to get it started in the hole. also, it might not cut the threads deep enough before it bottoms out in the hole.

Just buy a second one and grind it down. Leave just a little bit of the taper, maybe just a thread or two though.

I would just get a bottoming tap. Im fairly good at grinding tooling but have always had issues making a good bottoming tap out of a spiral point.

This is true. I have a family member who works at a place that goes through tools fairly quickly. I asked him for a 'spent' 10-32 so I could grind it down for a bottoming tap. He got me one and ground it down for me.

All things considered, if OP has to order one, might as well get a bottoming from the get go. I don't think I've seen a bottoming tap at any of the stores that I feel like driving to.

My local ACE will put one in their normal order and get it delivered to the store. It's no "sale" price, but better than shipping and handling in most cases. Grainger or McMaster-Carr are sometimes competitive, depending on the tool.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm gonna order a bottoming tap for the job It sounds like I just need to start it with my spiral tap and finish it with the bottoming tap?

There's a cheaper option; but it will take some leg work. Fan approved pans and round boxes in the electrical section of tour hardware store are threaded for 10-32 threads. Some of the pans will have self tapping 10-32 bolts. If you have started your threads with a regular tap, the bolt should have no problem finishing the threads.
