Empire Relay; Air through grip on an Ion?

Hey guys, having been playing with Ions a bit lately, closed bolt, mech, etc, it occurred to me that there really is no reason this gun needs the entire front asa section of the grip frame.

Has anybody done an air-through grip on an Ion? You could literally chop the front of the frame off right where the trigger guard ends, would make for one tiny little package...

The concern I have is how to essentially run a barb up into the grip frame from the relay. That's all that it would need, one barb.
I know on the Mini it kinda gets shoved onto the end of the air transfer tube and sealed with an o-ring in between the two pieces, so, for those who may know more about the Empire Relay, what would people think is the best method of doing this?

Should I get a mini air transfer tube and try to mimic the connection methodology, or would it be possible to actually thread the relay itself? Is there enough material to thread?
Does the adapter that it comes with for the TM-7/TM-15 actually create a seal, or deos that have to be tightened down from above or something?
Hard to tell from pics on the interwebz

Any input would be appreciated, thanks

If I were you, I would create a plug that fits on the Relay, instead of the air transfer tube, and tap that plug for the air fitting you need.

a guy on techpb did this. drilled and tapped 1/8 NPT the bottom of the frame where the asa goes drilled the same on the asa to match and then used an o-ring to seal the two together. then mounted a wgp tickler lpr in the grip frame and ran it to a 3-way to make a walk-able mech ion.

Cool, i'll have to look that up.
But wouldn't you have major shootdown issues using an lpr as the only regulator?

INteresting... so does the rail just allow the asa to slide on, like the mini or tm adaptor brackets? That is an interesting solution. Glad to know someone got it working with essentially the same internals though, so much room in that grip frame...

I am interested in this as well. My question is how would you adjust velocity?
