Father/Son GX-5 Buildoff

My father (2slow4me) and I had a couple of stock ANS GX-5 Cockers kicking around and decided we'd see who could build the better gun. Access to basic tools, a manual mill and lathe, and myself doing all the anodizing we got to her.

Now it's up to you guys to decide which you like better!

Top (Son) Bottom (Father) Both used the stock backblock as the base for the sled

Father - Milled off ears and slotted VASA for quick change to pump and semi

Son - Milled off ears and slotted body for accent of barrel to show through

Father - Milled trigger guard for a more comfortable grip

Son - Not so much

Father - Hooked stock aluminum beavertail into a snatch grip

Son - Shortened Evil beavertail into a snatch grip

Father (Left) Son (Right) Both used stock bolt as base with identical mount (Press pin)

Father (Left) Son (Right) Custom Stainless Bolt Pin with each owns preference of shape

Father - Two small holes in stock barrel to show freak boring

Son - Small slot near back of barrel to show freak insert

Who will be the winner!

Ooh... I gotta say you win. Your snatch grip looks less annoying, your VASA looks cleaner, your barrel is neater, and your bolt pin (in my opinion) looks better.

You did both?

I like the orange scheme a lot, but I also like the subtleties in the other finish.

I picked Father, mostly because I don't like wood on non-brass guns and double triggers on pumps. Your snatch grip is nicer though.

I preferred the trigger guard that still had some meat left. I would imagine it being really annoying to have my hand slide up behind the trigger guard. I also prefer the straight snatch grip and the way the barrel was milled to show the freak insert.

I keep wondering how well that works also. I've thought about cutting on a frame like that, but it seems like the swing trigger would be pretty stiff all the way at the top. That execution is as good as I would ever hope for, but I think I would have to try it out before I could think that it was going to feel right.
