I'd try to come up with something. Feb 1st seems awfully tight though. June 1st would be my prefernce.

This gave me a kinda cool idea,

you know how some water guns require you to pump it to build up pressure so it can fire,

what if you loaded it with pepsi or coke and used mentos for ammo,

or a further idea what if they sold dried powder you could add to fizzy water with the same chemicals that enhance the effect that you find in coke you could aswell as having the container of water also have a magazine for the mentos.

*edit*
Can we go one step higher and make it shoot tennis balls at 300fps instead of paintballs?

The tennis balls need to be shot at an equivalent fps/diameter ratio..
So 300/.68"=X/2.5"
X=1100fps or 750mph if you prefer

So basically a ball of fuzz nearly traveling the speed of sound....If only it wasn't hollow, and gunpowder would need to be involved.

damn I have an idea

Yeah you'd definitely want to keep it subsonic, otherwise the tennisball cannon silencer wont be as effective and it might get dangerous.

Seriously though, a 57 gram tennis ball travelling at 300fps has the kinetic energy of 238 joules. Not bad right? Well for comparison a 3.3g paintball has 14 joules at 300fps, and a 9mm parabellum is between 500-700 joules.

I might throw my hat in the ring, but I don't really have access to any tools/machinery so we'll see how it goes.

Well pile on guys, I think we can extend the deadline to May 1, just want to get as many people in as possible. That way I can copy the one I like the most!

I have been doing the physics for a few of my ideas, and I really really *really* think 50cal is the way to go with this contest. It isn't like it's hard to get a hold of, 95% of Wal-Marts stock it (both by the case and by the hundred) as do many retailers in Canada. The JT stuff is even purchasable down here. Surely someone else must feel the same? =/
