Freak Tip Threading - Finally figured it out...

I've been trying for a while to produce a viable dual-lead thread for a Freak tip and after destroying several pieces managed to get it right...

So, here it is, a 15/16" Freak tip:

The scratches beside the threads are due to the tight tolerances between the bottom of the cut and the OD of the material on either side - no place to start or stop without some sort of interference when single-point cutting. It's hidden anyway

So... Which method did you use to create the dual start?

I usually use the "set the compound parallel to the piece, then advance or retreat the compound the correct distance to offset the threads by 1/2 the thread pitch."

If you think 2 start threads are fun, try rethreading for ICD 4 start barrel threads

I set the compound parallel to the workpiece - just like Ty mentioned... I had tried it by turning between centers and then shifting the drive dog 180 degrees. That didn't work out so well.

Dukie, on even thread pitches my old South Bend will start at the same location with all whole numbers on the threading dial - I used all of them...

I wanted it to work this time... Besides, with my luck I'd forget where I started or miss on the last cut.
