Dying a derlin bolt

Hey, I was wondering if the water mixed with dye would make the derlin expand. Has anyone tried dying there white bolts red and how did it turn out?

Wow, you read my mind. I was thinking about this today. Weird. Unfortunately I don't have the answer, but someone here has to.

This isn't really to helpful but it may be.

If you're dying it, then it is exposed, if exposed it probably doesn't need to hold a tight tolerance. So maybe just dye the exposed part and if it expands so be it, if not no problem.

1) It's 'delrin'. Pet peeve of mine, along the same lines as 'ATM machine', 'ABS brakes', and those damn mid-westerners 'warshing' their car.

2) Delrin really doesn't swell too badly, most of the time. Boiling may contribute, but you may want to try using double-strength dye solutions, or simply straight dye, instead of hot dying it. If that doesn't work, try boil-dying a cheapie bolt otherwise destined for your loaner.

on another board I frequent the little agglets are always talking about how they dye them for their ego's and Timmys - from what I have see is that it doesnt usually come close to the color you want unless that color is black. Like said earlier - try it on something else first.

I have dyed nylon wire ties with great success. I don't think delrin takes dye as well as nylon. Boiling the nylon softens it some, takes a couple of months to dry out completely. I wonder, if the delrin swelled, would it eventually dry and shrink back to original size?

I use powdered Rit dye in boiling water on Bushmaster and Promaster delrin bolts with no problems. no swelling. I did 3 blue 1 green 1 orange 1 red for guys on the team. also did some hybrid grips blue ,green and yellow. some clear smart parts grips in orange, pink and red. halo lids in blue, and green and a rev lid in red.

Idea:

get some.

Try it.

Report back.

The answers are always there, they just may not be as easy or as cheap as well always want. It's a diving board not a cliff, go ahead and jump.

Its possible. Ive dyed delrin pump handles/ten round tubes and the like. Go to your local walmart and pick up some RIT dye. Put it in an old pot and mix in some water and a couple table spoons of salt. Next bring the contents to a boil and drop your parts in for about 10 minutes. Keep some bleach and paper towels handy. After the parts have soaked for about 10 minutes in the boiling dye pull them out and give them a thorough rinse under some cool water. Give the parts a light washing with some dish soap and your finished.
