Autococker Barrel Tap ?'s

I was wondering if there are alternatives to buying the $88 barrel taps for autococker threads? I was going to ask Rainman but I figured he'd be too busy. So I'm putting it here.

Also are there easier more common(meaning taps are more available/cheaper) barrel threads that can be tapped?

Not really any cheaper ones.

'cocker taps are 15/16-20. Not sure about the clearances, but I got mine at Wholesale Tools, here.

The price actually went up a bit. I think mine were $18 each.

Would you have to order them on the internet, or do you think you could find one at a home depot or something?

If you have any big tool warehouses (like Wholesale, or Enco if they even have physical stores) check them. A little extra cost from the store might still be cheaper than shipping.

I bought mine from wholesale tool just like Deus. You can get by without the bottoming tap but if you have the extra cash i would get both.

Keep in mind though... the taps are supposed to be "GH-5", meaning oversized by .005" to allow for anodizing to occur, and the barrel to still fit.

Anodizing wont affect the fit. Anno will add .008 at the most...most PB anno wont grow past +.001. Taps will vary aproximatly .010 and never be to the .000. You'l be fine ordering the taps shown in the link.

I know this thread is ancient but I want to rethread my old traccer tagmaster. I was wondering if I can hand tap the body for the new threads or if I need a drill press. Also what would I need to drill out the old threads? I have used smalle hand taps for projects like my closed bolt mech ion so I'm not completely new to tapping. Would these be the taps I need? 15/16-20 Tap - Reiff & Nestor
