| MCB Member | Be careful with those shavings...it gets bad if you short out the terminals of your cell phone that you put into your shirt pocket. Don't ask me how I know. In the old days if you wanted to be an aprentice machinist in Germany, you had to make a cube by hand with files first. You only had one peice of metal to work with, if it got too small they sent you home. Wait until the first time you rapid into a chuck lol.

| 学生 | Or snap a 200$ carbide Boring bar. Or do a tool change at the chuck in the lathe...

| Fully Stocked Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Kinnelon. NJ | In my short stint so far only one woops..... I was swapping material out of the Lathe and in my haste I restarted it a little too soon.... All I saw was in slow motion "Matrix" style ...a chuck key wizzing by my head and there was nothing I could do... it happened to fast... Needless to say.... Mental note was taken.... take your time dumbass

| 学生 | LOL Even though he has finally learned his lesson there is a guy (who is about to graduate) I was in class with who NO one will stand before or behind when he is operating a lathe. His record thus far is 6 times in a single 4 hour class forgetting to take the chuck key out of the lathe. Plus no one wants to stand near Ben when he uses the grinder since the time he forgot to engage the magnetic chuck. So what is this mystery part you are working on?

| MCB Member Join Date: Oct 2007 | Man, I just started machining at MY school, too. They're REALLY making us take it slow, starting with a nylon/ fiber-reinforced delrin type thing. The machines are little Harbor Freight deals, so face milling takes a couple years, but otherwise it's kinda fun. I am a little perplexed though... chucks on a mill? Aren't you supposed to use collets? And they removed the auto-travel gears on the lathes... I hit the engage lever, and nothing happened. I was kinda sad.

| MCB Member Join Date: Jul 2006 | this is funny TF. everyday at work (i am a TA for our schools D and M class) i see little freshman doing there first machine work, and its funny to think of you doing the same thing. some the MEs around there alweays use the phrase "happiness from two handles" nothing more fun than imagining something that doesn't exist, planning it out, doing the math, then actually making it. thats what makes me love engineering, and even when you failing tests left and right, you still love it.
