Making a wood stock
Since I was unhappy with the look and feel of my current stock (the short forgrip) for the Klever I decided to make my own. I have made pistol grips before and a wood stock has since then been on my to-do list for some time now. I grabbed a board of walnut from my dad's place and got to work.
Using a cardboard template I trace out the blank and cut it with a jig saw.
Next I sanded out the groove for the body to sit in with a wood dowel and sandpaper.
This was the hardest part of the build, chiseling out the stock for the lever action and trigger group.
As you can see in this picture the lever is not flush with the stock. When I was chiseling the hand grip I only had the lever action on when carving it for reference. The trigger hits the lever since the stock is too thin between the body and lever. Opps.
I shaped the stock out using a flat and round rasps, planes and a hand held belt sander for the precision work.
The solution to fixing the gap between the stock and lever was to cut a scrap peice of wood, line up the wood grains and carve it so it'll fit perfectly onto the stock so there are no gaps, glue it, and clamp it. Since that would take more time then what I have already put into making the stock I said screw it. I made a small spacer with some scrap wood and wrapped the grip with brown leather and cut the butt end off and make it a Pirate stock (I was planning on making one anyways).
This pic is after I stained it with two coats of linseed oil..
The stock worked perfect and without the butt end I can rock and cock the gun easier for loading balls into the breech. Now I can cock the gun and don't bother to see if the ball loads, zero chops yesterday!
BTW this is KL-18 with a gold plated 9422 Winchester lever.
very cool man, good job with that!
Bravo to you I like it alot. I like the lever too. Now once funds are good, I have some ideas.
Yeo that looks pretty slick. Now you just need to work on the kp a little bit. Is that copper that I see on it?
Yes that's copper you see, poor man's brass for the Thadapter I made.
I do have plans on getting the brass re-blackened.
You best be coming out to BFG with that new pistol stock. Its in Feb if you didn't know.
That'a a bad, stock hacking crowd you've been runnin' with...
Why did you go to the trouble of crafting such a beauty buttstock if you were just gonna pull a Crafter number on it?
Canadians are so impressionable.
It must be all the extra trees they have up there... they finger.."Eh we've got plenty" and it was walnut too.. Damn Shame!!!!
You could have gotten around the over travel fairly easily.... oh well.. too late now ;)
Good stuff bro!
That is awesome!!
Don't worry I'm going to use the butt end to make some pistol grips, and I prefer the cut off stock now anyways. Look on the bright side I didn't cut the original stock, or the one Bret made for the lever action.
