My first finished project...

Well - almost - it needs a few holes and and anno.

Here is the project from start to finish:

After about the first two hours today I had this:

I started with a inch bar of aluminum stock and turned it down to .910.

I then knurled that. I purposefully crosshatched the knuling a little so it would serve as a match striker. It isn't as pretty as the K&M (see below) but works for my purpose.

I then started on the cap. That is the thing that takes so stinkin' long.

Shown here with only one O-ring - you will be able to also use the bottom of the cap as a striker.

Tomorrow I will turn this down a little bit - and then set the compass shown inside. This may be tricky - but I am learning a ton.

I will also drill the cap out for the smaller Ferrocerium rod tomorrow.

Then comes the part for me that is new - boring the inside of the match case out.

I will bore out the inside tomorrow - turn down a portion at the base for a lanyard to fit through - and then I will part it off - I could potentially be done with my prototype tomorrow. I may even set a striker for the ferro rod in the bottom - like the Aurora has.

Here is a pic of what I have so far next to a K & M matchcase for reference.

Here is the next four hours: (this was my first time boring):

I have to drill three more holes and it is done. I will drill two for the end fob hole and one more for the Ferrocerium rod in the cap.

The body is pretty much how I want it - the cap was perfect until I decided to trim some material off and the jaws slipped. DAMN! You can see the jaw marks if you look close - I was able to clean a lot of the mess up.

Thoughts?

Thanks Heebs - it is a rip off of a K&M matchcase. Those are the gold standard...

It turned out pretty good - there will be some improvements - but this is basically what I want to turn out.

Looks pretty good. I didn't think you could still buy strike-anywhere matches any more.

Eh, no biggie if it is a "ripoff."

I think it's awesome to create something outta nothing. Are you going to get the case anno'd? Would look pretty cool in a dust finish.

I am going to get this one finished in type three anno - black.

You CAN buy them - you just can't order them on line without paying a haz mart charge.

LA:

Thanks - I try hard and my teacher is great and patient.

Eli - why don't I make some eleven rounders - so you have that ONE extra shot.

I could do it - it would be about 20 bucks a tube!

Maybe some one-rounders for my single shot?
