| Magnesium Boxgun Like most of you out there, I had an unused 2"x2-1/4"x20" block of raw magnesium laying around and of course a spare Trracer. I've been meaning to start a Box gun project and figured, "I'm sure this has probably been done a bunch of times, but here's my try". Resources: ![]() Parts cut, Trracer harvested for the parts I'll need: ![]() I'm going to turn one of the 1"x1" bars into a body and the other one into a feed tube, retaining the square profile. I'll be making a magnesium drop-out valve and box slide. The finish will remain raw, as magnesium "weathers" to a dull gray. I'll cut the stock barrel down to about 5". Sorry for the dirty lense on the first image, just got back from Cape Hatteras, salt spray on the old Kodak.

| Brass might be too much for a project like this. I meant, you could kill food with brass, if you get lost in the wilderness. And, really, who needs something like that? With magnesium, you can cook it.

| OK, to silence the pundits, the barrel shall be made of brass. With the weight savings, I can afford the heavy alloy and of course nothing shoots better. BTW, the body was squared up on the mill today and is in the lathe. Most of the drilling is complete.

| Brass barrels hone up really nicely, super slippery too. In the old days, players used to carry "brush hones" and run them through their barrels at the field. Interesting fact, the owner of Brush Research in California, the largest manufacturer of brush hones, played paintball and to this day lists a rear hone and a barrel hone. Paintball from Brush Research Manufacturing I'm super aware of the "flammable" nature of magnesium, for sure, though I don't think regular cutting tools can create enough head to "spark" up the swarf. That being said, I'm taking my time, using coolant, and cleaning up often. I've machine magnesium motorcycle parts for years and don't anticipate any problems.
