What metal do I get?

Hi,

I'm a new guy but I've been reading this forum for a while. I want to design a grip frame for the phantom but I'm not sure what type of metal/material to get. Any recommendations? Could I buy it on McMaster-Carr?

And a side question...how does the sound of a flatline-barrel on a pump gun strike you? Of course you can put an Apex but that wouldn't be fun to build . Please don't flame, I just couldn't help but wondering.

Thanks.

high grade aluminum is best bet. of course, you could try brass.. but really i think high grade aluminum would be good enough for a trigger frame, and certainly better quality than cast potmetal. the phantom trigger is already made of aluminum, youre talking of a grip block?

Thanks. I meant the frame assembly (block that grip attaches onto with the trigger) + grip (includes handle bar, etc.) ... for that matter. Of course the phantom manual gives each single part a different name but people have made it as one unit.

Ive been using 6061... FYI you can get 8"x8" square stock in lots of thicknesses for not to expensive from McMaster Car and unless you go wacky.. you can get two grip frames from it.

6061 is the general standard with aluminum, it's very versitile, easy to machine, accepts annodizing well, etc. It's what I use with my work. McMaster is alittle expensive, if you just search the internet for small quanity metal dealers you'll get plenty of hits that'll be cheaper than McMaster. You could also try ebay, I use it all the time.

A tip I learned doing projects in college, try to find a scrap yard near you. Sometimes they'll have random off-sized blocks of stock that might be big enough for you to pattern your part in (especially if you don't care about grain direction). Might be slim pickin's now with the price of metals so high, but never hurts to look if there's one near by.

(I'm waiting for someone to post the obligatory Slim Pickens riding the nuke picture....)

Better go with PCX or PCC grade graphite.

Lighter than aluminum. Plus it's naturally black. Polishes up nicely.

Flatline on a pump gun- I've seen Flatline-equipped WGP Snipers. The challenge would be that Flatlines tend to be somewhat inaccurate- the ball goes way out there, then tends to arc left or right.
