Winter Woodworking Site Project *Updated*

The Winter woodworking project is a go so Ive started this new thread, the old thread, titled "Winter site Project" is still up for those who are wondering.

Rules/desciption are as follows

Quote:
Subject: Winter Site Project
Project Title: Winter Woodworking Project

Brief Project Breakdown

The overall goal of this project it to create something paintball related that is wood and/or has a significant amount of wood. Examples of projects are as follows but not limited to: custom rifle stocks, marker display cases, and marker grip panels. On a larger scope the goal of the project is simply to involve several MCarterBrown site members in a fun, creative and inexpensive project.

Rules

1. Must "showcase" wood, (no painted wood, unless the project is 60%~ wood: field box, display case, ect ) Stained wood in any color (even if it appears to be painted) is more than okay. This rule is to weed out any slapped together spray painted projects.. Take your time with it, and end up with something that you are proud of and can use, not something that gets thrown away. Rifle Stocks may be painted, so long as its part of the design of your project.

2. Must be paintball related, and usable ( no fake markers) Unless you are entering into the “how to” category (see below)

3. Wood may not be used to hold pressure for safety reasons. Making a marker body out of wood is unsafe. Thus any projects that use wood as a pressure vessel will not be included in the site build

4. May or may not be marker related ( IE field box, display case/stand, ect)

5. You many not enter “products” into the project, however if you do produce wood products, this does not cut you out of the build. Just no “products”

6. You may enter as many projects as you would like into the build. However depending upon the number of total entries (from everyone ) we may choose to limit the number of any one persons projects that can be placed in the finalist groupings. Only one project will be selected per category, for any one person however.

Deadline

All projects must be submitted on or before May 1st 2007. This project does not have restrictions on time, only that the project will be completed on or before the project deadline of May 1st 2007. This means that you can use a project started (but not completed ) before the posting of these rules.

Judging

There will be five (5) judges who will select the finalists. Projects will be judged in four (4) categories (see below) , producing four (4) finalists for each category(see exception below). The winner of each category will be decided via a site pole. One finalist will be selected by the judges as “Best Winter Woodworking Project”. Winners will receive bragging rights. Judges may enter projects but will not be eligible for any finalist position, they will however be eligible for Honorable Mention. The 5th category (how to) will not be judged by “the people” in any way, but rather by the judges alone. One winner will be selected as “Best How To Project” and will receive bragging rights. Any prizes, if given, will not be announced until after the build is over.

Categories are as follows:

1. Most unique idea (4 finalists)
2. Best non-marker , paintball related project (4 finalists)
3. Best craftsmanship (4 finalists)
4. Best use of an exotic wood (4 finalists) (exotic being defined by anything other than pine or cedar )

Honorable mention (10)

How To Category

This category is not limited to paintball related projects. It can be anything from How to keep those woodworking tools in tip top shape, or how to build you own guitar, to even how to build that chest of drawers you’ve been wanting to build.

The requirements of this project are simple. You must produce an in depth “how to” write up, complete with pictures (the more the better) and detailed drawings and measurements (if applicable)

Project submittals (non “how to” projects)

Requirements

1. Brief description of your project, (150 words max, give or take a few words, even a simple paragraph will suffice in most cases)

2. Pictures- 2 minimum, 6 maximum. Each with one sentence description (not part of requirement no. 1, unless you would like it to be) It is suggested that one picture be a “before” or “ work in progress picture” but is not required

3. If you have a thread about your project, please provide a link. This is not for judging purposes, but for those interested in your project/making comments/ect.

Entries to be posted into a thread Winter Woodworking Entry Thread for all to see. There will be not comments in this thread. .

“How To” projects

This one is simple, this is the link(http://www.mcarterbrown.com/forums/s...php?t=11056)to a thread where you post a link to your project and a title. Its that simple.

Thanks, and happy woodworking everyone
Alvin

I actually have three wood projects in the works that I could throw into the mix. I'll judge though if you find dificulty in finding judges.

I have found two judges. Need to find two more. The judges who wish to be publcly anounced as being so will be in a few weeks. The judges who do not wish to be announced publicly will not be until May.

As always any questions reguarding the project can be directed to me via PM.

Thanks
Alvin

All I know is that I want one of these, after seeing an ad for it yesterday! Point, click, feed in board, out comes super wooden coolness! Like a CNC machine (sort of) for wood!

^ Yeah I was looking at one of those myself in a catelouge. I just cant justify spending that much cheese on somthing like that at this point. A plain ole plainer (that sounded wierd) I could see buying, for half that, but 1700 bucks, wow. Still uber cool

I don't know about that. Craftsman for a CNC type machine? I'll buy thier wrenches and basic tools (how about that return policy?), but I don't think that I would trust them for something like this. I could be completely wrong though, wouldn't be the first time.

Okay just need one more judge. . So far I have tried to create a good cross section of MCB with those who I have accepted as judges. We can do it with the 4 total judges we have now, but I realy want that fifth judge.

In a week or so an official project submission guide/thread will be posted, along with the list of judges who wish to be announced. I will also corespond with the judges to make any final editing in the rules (we might relax two of them just a bit). Stay tuned and fire up them table saws in the mean time
