If I run out early in the game I just draw fire but if it is later I grab a rentals gun or one of my teammates and go Rambo and kill the other team.

I imagine one thought behind the 'don't leave you're equipment behind rule' is I would not want to dive into or onto my teammates marker or hopper. Could hurt me or the marker.

I played a game just sitting behind a guy in the snake, poking my head out, and telling my guy where the other team was.

I've gone out in a game with just a barrel. I freaked 2 kids out when I surrendered them. I suppose they thought I had a gun.

Landing on a pod is so much more comfortable than a discarded light weight hopper?

And if you leave your gear laying around on a field, and it gets broken,... well it was your own fault for leaving it there, so it would be a risk you choose to take if you take off without it.

I once played Ctf Halo style (unlimited re spawns) with some friends of mine. (Maybe 3 years ago?) Nobody was getting the flag because there was too much paint flying. Literally 15 vs. 15 on a small field. Gave my marker to my best friend who was using a rental. I expected him to ditch the rental and use my marker. But nope he hauls both of them on top of the bunker and starts shooting like a mad person. I just ran as fast as I could to the 50 and grabbed that thing and ran as fast as I could back. Man I miss when all my friends used to live nearby..

It's actually a rule for circumventing a "that hit wasn't on it when I dropped it" argument. Nothing gets dropped, keep it close even if its broken. It does generally get leeway for people who lose a hopper/pack mid run or dive. The refs around here won't retrieve the gear for you mid-game, but they won't call you out if you dive into the snake and your hopper keeps going, or if your pack falls off running up the field.

Gotta keep your pokerface on the field for sure. Never let anyone know about your paint or air situation. I like many pump players have surrendered players using an empty marker.

On a lighter note- Never try to surrender players with half a gun......
